I have a clicking noise similar to when we used to put a lolly stick in the spokes of are bicycle wheels to make them sound like a motorcycle. Its gradually comes in after start up and remains until you drive up to about 30mph. Heard it could be the valves in the diesel pump opening and closing. Its definitely coming from that side of the engine. 300tdi. Any ideas of a fix.

I had the same thing, worse when accelerating hard or under load, 200 TDI, was injector washer as suggested by my local indy .

I initially thought injector but it runs lovely. I dont understand how it disappears on higher revs unless somethings out of balance.

It sounds like a sticky injector I had one on my evo when I left it over the winter but it soon cleared when I
kicked fook out it lol
You could stick an injector cleaner through it might be worth a try & its a cheap option before going any further.

Pound to a penny its the vac pump...

+1 - My first port of call with 300's which present with such issues - usually it is this too ... closely followed by, it's only just had one fitted  ... IME, the good ones last about 80K miles - the chocolate ones maybe 80 mins:mad: :mad::mad:

Easy enough to take it orft the block, and cover the hole with something sensible, start the injun and see if the noise goes away .....;)

Failing that, as others have said - injector washer(s) or one of the belts - either aux ( serpy ) or timing - when was it last done ? ( given it goes at half engine revs - this can be a tell tale - as can a load of rubber gunge in the timing case drain hole )

So you reckon my vac pump at 200K will be carped? It's not making a noise, but has been mentioned it may be aiding my oil consumption

Well, it's well beyond the MTBF which I have seen - but clearly, there must be a good one out there ;) I'd be surprised if the poppet valves are still working well at that mileage, but, again, some of them must have been made correctly, simply due variations in tolerances - you might have the exception that proves the rule... but, yeah, it probably kaput.....

The first thing to cause trouble with a Vac pump, it starts to leak through one of the rivets on the cover plate and quite offten the ticking follows...

Indeed - though I have seen a small number let go quite badly - low engine oil ( or crap oil ), and the thing seizes up, and then goes bang .... i even tried bolting one back together years ago..... waste of time ... first loss was the best one

I think any of mine that disintegrate, I'll replace will be with an electric one.... :)

Any particular electric one you'd recommend?

I've no experience to base anything on - but the Aussie's seem to have good results with the Facet ones, which seems a bit dear to me, and also the Audi ones - which are cheapish on the bay :)

Ahh, thought you'd seen a few set up. I might have a look at those on eBay. Cheers :)

Using a big screwdriver as a stethoscope, I've narrowed the noise down to the injector pump. This was suggested to me aswell as the VP. Apparently it is the valves opening and closing supplying the injectors? The cure seems to be a diesel additive. Any views.

Well, we run 1% mineral* two stroke oil in our 300's to make up for the lack of sulphur in modern derv - which I'm assuming will be the same as "yours" on the emerald isle ... easy to do, cheap, and IME, more or less instant result.... certainly our 300's are quieter as a result.... :) ( TBH, there was no specific noise beforehand )

Other additives will be the likes of Millers Diesel Power Ecomax - but I've no experience of it .....

* = must be mineral - synthetic won't do the same job.....
