I have a problem with my 2002 Freelander TD4, it has done 75000 miles and the engine runs rough or misses, sometimes it is worse than others, sometimes it misses on tick over and sometimes when you rev it between 1000-2500 rpm in neutral it then produces a white/blue smoke which gets worse the longer you keep it revving but clears after a few minutes on returning to tick over.
It drives ok without smoking and power is good and it is difficult to tell if it is missing whilst driving.
I have changed the fuel filter, checked and cleaned several connector plugs, fitted a new maf, checked vacuum hoses, cleaned egr, replaced depression limiting valve and filter, I have also tried disconnecting each injector in turn but that makes it a lot worse, I am now stuck as to what to try next.
Please help as it is driving me mad.
Thanks, Kelvin.

Hello, I also have a 2002 TD4, 81,000 miles, suffered the same problem, including rough tick-over and cutting out at junctions, and white smoke on re-starting. It is now running perfectly, all I can put it down to is dirty fuel system/ injectors.

I changed the fuel filter which did not seem to have much affect initially. Then I ran a tank with Redox injector cleaner and 2 litres of cooking oil, followed by filling her with BP Diesel Ultima on the next tank. Now she is running so smoothly without even a flicker on the tickover. If things hadn't improved, I was going to change the fuel pump, however, this was obviously not necessary.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Jon.

Thanks Jon,

I have tried several bottles of wynn’s injector cleaner over the past months but it has done very little, I have also put in a bottle of BG244 injector cleaner 200 miles ago but has yet it has made no difference either.

Hi Kelvin,

Not sure if there is much difference between the injector cleaners, I had also used a Millers cleaner with little affect. Why not put in a litre or so of cooking oil at the same time. Did you change the fuel filter? What fuel are you running on? I have now filled up twice with BP Ultima, havent refilled with anything else since but as I said, no more problems, and it does sound like my problems were a lot worse than yours, what a nightmare it was, engine dying at junctions and roundabouts. It was fine at high speed though.

Hi Jon,

Yes I have changed the fuel filter but as yet I have not tried any cooking oil but I will, I usually fill up at my local Texaco station.

Hi Shutty,

The maf I bought on ebay and I am running a roverron synergy tuning module, I have tried disconnecting the roverron and it is exactly the same.

Ok I will try that tomorrow, I also have a k&n air filter fitted - not sure if that makes a difference?

I have tried it with the maf & tuning kit disconnected and there is an improvement on low engine revs (1500 rpm) however when the engine is cold there is still a little missing and smoke from the exhaust at 2500 rpm, when the engine is warm this clears too.

Hi Kelvin,

Any improvements? My TD4 is now running BETTER than it has since I first bought it 1 1/2 years ago. Have just given it a full service myself, and I can really feel the difference knowing all the service was done properly, thanks everyone to the help on this forum.

Cheers

Hi Jonier,

glad your TD4 is running ok now, mine is still not running right it is still missing, I have tried injector cleaner with cooking oil and now I am on my second tank full but as yet not much difference, I have also changed the maf and this has made little difference too.

Did you try switching to BP Ultima, for one time, just to see. I didn't do anything special on my 2002 TD4 other than what I told you, and it is so smooth now, you don't see even a slight flicker on the tickover. Did you try Redox, I just bought another bottle tonight in ASDA for £3 odd.

Best of luck.

I did fill up with BP Ultima but not the redex, I am still using the BG244 at the moment which cost me £25 (hope it works).

Cheers.

I still have a problem with my TD4 missing, I have noticed that the front fuel pump runs for exactly one minute before cutting out when I turn the ignition on, I am sure I read in one of the posts that they should only run for 12 seconds or so, does this indicate that the pump in the tank is not working correctly and could be the cause of the missing problem?

The electric pumps won't be affecting the rough running.

If its still bad with the maf disconnected (Ebay mafs are not good) with or without Synergy connected, then possibly have the injectors serviced as there is not really much else than would cause these symptoms.

Lynx Diesels - Diesel Fuel Injection Specialist in Wokingham have a good reputation and reasonable charges.

Thanks Ron,

I bought the maf on ebay from massey 4x4 who is Armstrong Massey from north yorksire and are L/R dealers so it should be ok (cost me £170)

The fault seems to a bit intermittent (sometimes is worse than others, you think it is almost gone then it comes back again) if it is the injectors wouldn’t it be running rough all the time?

I've had similar symptons with a TD4 with lower mileage. Tried everything including the cookin oil additive. Thought I'd got to the bottom of it with replacement MAF from roverron - this sorted it out, but just this weekend after a 400mile round trip down south the intermittat erratic idling has returned. The missus had filled up with supermarket fuel so I added some millers additive - no real difference. I suspect that it's something electronic as it is intermittent, sometimes fine, sometimes not so - only affects tickover on mine tho- once revved it's fine. It is however a little unneverving when pulling away or reverse manouvers - it's an auto and sometimes gives the impression it's going to stall.
Not sure what to try next, and it's really irratating as the car is otherwise spot on.
