VCU issues

Can anyone help me, I have just got round to attempting to put propshaft back on my freelander as it was removed due to a dodgy vcu. The rear prop has fitted to the replacement vcu okay. I replaced the boot on the front prop but can't get it onto the vcu. I have removed the yoke from the uj but still no joy. I did wonder if I have the wrong vcu, what is different on the V6 compared to the TD5?

All the VCU splines are the same. Is the spline on the VCU damaged?

The correct way to install the VCU, is as a unit with both propshafts attached before hand. It makes it difficult to handle, but that's the correct way to do it.

I have built the rear prop onto the vcu, the front splines look okay, it wouldn't however slide on by hand. I have ordered a longer bolt to try pulling it together as I didn't want to damage the vcu by trying to hammer it on.

It's better to have the whole assembly together before fitted.

Are you trying to line it up with the front CV already fitted to the IRD? If so, you can't do it like that.

A longer bolt won't help, as it'll bottom out before the spline is fully home.

John as given you the right info you need to make the props up off the car then fit them, use axle stands or get someone to help you hold it up when fitting it as an whole unit.

I can't recall whether the bolt can clear the prop if it is turned away on the UJ, but could it get the thing started, then take it out and finish the job with the correct bolt?

What ever though, I don't think it should need that help anyway.

Is there rust in between the splines? If so rub with folded sand paper to remove a small amount of rust then see if the prop and vcu will fit together.
