Which engine

OK so that's out of the question then. I'm going to get rid of my 1.8 petrol and either get a TD4 or something completely different and Japanese! The TD4 has the BMW engine, yes? So I presume it doesn't suffer from the same problems as the K series engine? Is it worth spending my money on another Freelander? I think the Nissan X-Trail is out of the question as there's not enough room in the boot for the dogs. If I go for another Freelander I won't have to pay out to have new dog guards made, but if the TD4 is still going to be a money pit that I would rather pay out for new dog guards on something else.
 
X-Trail does have a bigger boot than the Hippoo, is reliable and compares well with the Hippoo offroad. Crap compared with real Land rovers, but is a better alternative to a Hippoo.
 
I have the back seats folded forward in mine so the dogs have loads of room. The X-Trail doesn't seem to have very good headroom and one of my dogs is quite tall! I'd like a Mitsubishi Shogun Warrior really but I don't think I'll have enough money.

So what about the reliability of the TD4 then?

The Freelander is Europe's best selling 4x4 and the TD4 is the best freelander. Say's it all really.

Well, there's no accounting for taste! ;) :D

I don't have a great opinion of Mitsubishis - I think a good illustration of their capability was the Mitsubishi Badminton Horse Trials a couple of years ago. There were Shoguns and L200s crawling around all over the place, but the emergency services all had Land Rovers - Fire and ambulance Defenders, paramedic Discoveries, the first aiders and radio comms were being transported in Defenders and a Freelander in road tyres [1] was spotted driving past a stuck L200.

I went to a launch of the "new" Mitsubishi Shogun back in 2005. It was the same year as the Discovery 3 came out. Even the Mitsubishi guys had to admit that the new interior of the Shogun couldn't match the ground up redesign of the Discovery. They only way the Mitsubishi could win was on price.

... and you can't underestimate the importance of that ...

It's the BMW 3 series engine. Goes like a train, massive reputation for reliability.

All engines have their faults but the only significant one on the TD4 seems to be the malfunction/failure of the Bosch MAF. It is easily diagnosed and replaced with an alternative part. We've had 66,000 miles of trouble free motoring from our TD4 - most reliable car we've ever had.

My work takes me up hill and down glen every week. For off road capability the freelander is best vehicle I've had. Its gone (and come back from) places Mitsubishis, Nissans and even the mighty Toyota have failed to negotiate. Girly button makes easy work of it all but much more fun working it out yourself. TD4 is a great engine but the failure of the bolt on bits, the 'legendary' LR build quality and attitude of stealers can make ownership frustrating at times!

If you have a big dog then get a horse box and tow it with a Td4.

I regularly drive defenders - great overland, prob no better, but not great on the road. Cant speak for the new disco but the old one was not so hot in tight spaces and like driving a boat at times. To clarify my point, for a vehicle in its class where road and off road driving is required, they are hard to beat
