Discovery 2 half chassis

Hi everyone

The rear end on my discovery 2 is completely shot and one of the shock mounts has gone as well. I'm a pretty competent mechanic and I'm handy with the welder but don't have a garage just the driveway have any of you guys done a half chassis on the driveway any advice would be great!

i would think you could do it on the drive, get backend as high as poss to able working room, post pics and let us know,

By half chassis, do you mean 1 of the 1400mm long sections that leave the original rear axle trailing arm mounts in place?
My brother and I replaced my rotten rear end with 1 of those in his garage on a lift.
I'd imagine it is doable without a lift, but much harder due to reduced access space.
I'll look at the photos I took to see what extra issues I can think of.

I think the challenge will be creating enough space to weld comfortably and supporting the car safely so you can remove the axle (with it removed you can see in the photos how much easier the access is).
It's worth stressing that a big advantage of the 1400mm section is that where it needs welding to the old chassis, you've got full access to all 4 surfaces with the body still in place - whereas with the short sections I've seen people only welding them on the sides & bottom only.

Yes it would be the 1400 section might aswell get rid of all the rot. Just registered to the forum waiting to be accepted by admin thanks for the tips that's mine as you can see it's well past it

What state is the fuel tank support ?
I was fortunate ours was not so bad - so we could repair it. But if your chassis is that bad, I'd expect the tank support to be beyond salvaging too.

I know. I have had 5 got 2 currently this is my project one (keeps me out of the wife's way) didn't give much money for it because of the chassis. I was going to do this one as a offroader and keep the other as my daily driver. The tank support isn't actually too bad to be honest, which I'm quite surprised about. I'll let you know when I have looked at them pics any more advice would be appreciated

Surely keeping the rear section "true" will be a nightmare if you lift the body to facilitate the welding???
The welding becomes a nightmare if you mount the body first.
New chassis is quicker, easier, and probably cheaper in the long term...imho

RAC , will do a half chassis for 1200 quid fitted when I spoke with them this Summer.
If I was to do it, I would save myself the heartache / backache and swearing...LOL.

A new chassis would be far out of my budget, I would love to do it there is a galvanized chassis on eBay at the minute for £1500. As for the half chassis I have got a price for £600 I was thinking 2-3 days I know what your saying about the backache heartache and swearing but would rather have £600 in my pocket I was also thinking to weld 3 sides whilst in place then drop it and weld the top, let me know what you guys think!

Can be done. Here is the first of a short series of Youtube videos covering a 1/4 chassis replacement. You can fast forward through the parts where he whinges about the dealer that sold him the car in the first place.

With the 1400mm replacement section, the join is located in an area where there is space to get a MIG welder nozzle in above the top surface without having to disturb the body. You can actually fasten the rear body mounts in place before welding.
We got the section for less than £600 - but we were buying 2 and the supplier was giving us a deal to get our feedback for future sales.
Beneagles, last time I checked, a replacement chassis was over £3,000 (excluding fitting costs - not easy to justify !

No can't justify that might aswell just buy one with a decent chassis to begin with. If you can do it in place that's great going to order one from RCA when I get paid. I will post some pics so you all can see if I'm doing anything wrong or want to throw some tips my way.

3k for a new chassis, then fitting and all the parts you change along the way, you have to be looking at the very long term of ownership, or may just not do it and patch it up as 2nd hand prices and mot failures are not so good!, or just say fook it and go to the pub!
