Over heating nightmare

This time posting for my father.

He has a series 3 with a transplanted disco 200tdi.

One of the bottom radiator hoses split on his drive back and dumped all the coolant onto the road. He only noticed when he got home. Luckily it happened about a mile from home (he walked back and found a line of coolant).

So engine was devoid of coolant for about a mile at about 30miles an hour in 2/3rd so maybe 5/6mins. Says when he got back and opened the bonnet engine was hot but not insanely hot - sizzle to a licked finger but still touchable with out burning yourself.

He’s really stressed about it as it’s his work vehicle and doesn’t have a lot of disposable income and is semi retired.

Obviously if the heads warped that’ll manifest in due course with the HG but any other things he/I can check for serious damage?

Tell him to wait for it to cool completely and then fill it up with water to see what it does, they are a hardy engine and will take some abuse.

Only way to know for sure if something is damaged is to run it, they are a cool running engine anyway but never the less, until it's run up there isn't much we can know, so long as there isn't any sign of HG damage like emulsified oil or blowing then he got lucky.

Failing that there are still some 200Tdi heads around for not a lot of money if it's cracked but if it's just warped then there is a motor engineers in Ipswich, can't think of the name of them but they did bucket loads of V8 heads for me over the years and made a super job of my 6 cylinder head when that needed skimmed and the valve seats done in the head.

That’s sound advice there mate, I’m back in a week or so can have a look for him. Is it mainly the head that is affected by over heating?

Funny the temp gauge didn’t really alert him I’m assuming as the coolant drained out it couldn’t measure the temp.

I doubt if running for 1 mile without coolant will cause any damage in 5 or 6 minutes.

Having looked at his
Journey it’s probably more like 10/15mins but in low gears and at least he wasn’t on the motor way

The low coolant alarm is a must fit now to give him peace of mind and stop him worrying every time he takes her out, very nice chap and his little Landy was very nice too

That’s a good shout. He puts that vehicle to work like it was meant to be used. It’s pulling over trees and pulling out tree stumps on a daily basis.
