To sell or keep ... defenders going up in value ??

hi all ..

After the Abs / Tc light problem , and the head gasket , I was wondering if its time to sell the defender ..

I bought the defender to use on climbing trips , a bit of light over landing and such , since then I use it with my dirt bikes .. but was always planning on sell in a 3 or 4 years time to invest the money into another venture

The lady owes me a fair bit , and my worry is that if the arse drops out I won't get my money bk , but at the same time I didnt want to sell it too early as it seems like they are going up in value ..

Wondering what you guys think , are these going up in value ? would it be wise to hold off and wait a few more years .. ?
 
In my opinion you will never get back the money you have spent on it to keep it roadworthy. All that does is make sure it doesn't loose too much value. I do not think prices are rising anymore, but they are vehicle which are not really depreciating either so as long as it is well maintained (not money you can add to the value) it should be worth a similar price to what you paid for it whenever you decide to sell it.
 
If you bought one pre-2010 it's definitely gone up in value if you maintained it, held it's value if you just stored it and didn't maintain it etc.
 
yeah mine is 1998 td5 , limited edition 50 year anniversary ... it is good condition , I dont mind maintaining it to keep it good , its just that in about 4 years time im buying a bigger boat , and is likely I will need to cash-in on the landy , which is a shame as we really love her ...

Sell your old boat instead. :)

You mean like every single vehicle ever built.
 
You cant count running/repair costs in the cars value, the only thing that matters is what you paid and what it is now worth, and with defenders them two prices are normally pretty much the same, assuming its like for like ie it was roadworthy/tidy to start with.
So in my case I paid 4k 9 yrs ago and its still worth about the same, but I have spent 4k on it in that time which doesnt mean its now worth 8k.

The best ones are the people who have their car on finance and count the remaining cost of the finance as the value of the car:D

As for value I think now people have twigged theres never going to be a shortage of defenders ever, the prices have calmed down over the last year or so.
 
I think it's likely that a lot of people will abandon LR now they, ve seen the new Def.... Especially now they know you can get 2 Ford rangers for the price of one of em.

To me, the price I paid is irrelevant as I haven’t bought it as an investment to sell on. I’ve spent a few £k’s speccing it to my taste and desires but don’t know or particularly care whether I’ll make a profit should I decide to part with it. Probably not but who knows.
Most, if not all of us are on here because we have this worrying affection for our vehicles over which we moan, curse and spend our hard earned cash but regardless carry on with them.
That is what is special about the breed!

I would completely agree with that, whereas my series is probably worth more now than I paid for it including the upkeep, that is because I paid virtually nothing for it, nearly everything on it is galvanised (came with the chassis already fittted) and other than basic servicing all I have done is paint it and fit a galv bulkhead.
My 110 however again is probably worth more than I bought it for (£1800) but I have probably spent nearly 50k on it in my 10 years of ownership. The last time I began adding up invoices from the file I got to about 24k and stopped so I wouldn't scare myself. I will definitely be in for a hefty loss if I ever sell, but I am not planning on ever selling it. For me it is also a hobby rather than just ownership rather than spending my money in the pub or on golf bats, i spend it on parts for the land rover. I definitely fall into the "worrying affection" category. I had wanted one for as long as I could remember and when I went to university at 18 the government foolishly gave me a large chunk of money in the form of a student loan so I spent it on a landrover that should not have had an MOT. I do not begrudge a penny I have spent on it, but it is definitely not and investment vehicle.
For me very few land rovers actually fall into the category of true investments, and for it to be an investment it needs to be completely original, and not meaningfully used. The OP's 50th edition may fall into this category if it is a genuine one rather than a replica, in very good condition, and fully original, but if the OP is using it it is unlikely to actually pay off. Treat it as a great vehicle rather than an investment and you will have a lot more fun and worry a lot less.
 
I personally think they’re cheap to run if part of the ownership is working on them. all cars are money pits, especially new. Most people only care about the monthly repayment that they can afford and will pay 2-3K per year for a car they will never own .
 
It used to be having a car that you had paid for / owned was a real status symbol, most folks would be lucky to have a bike with sidecar. Then this finance has all this fake status about of 'look at my shiny' car that does exactly the same thing Farmer Giles' grungy 200 TD Defender will do. He paid a few grand for his, fake-status has a 20 - 30 grand money leech on his back.
