I have clonk on take up - I've changed driveshafts and splined drive adaptors and no movement there but still plenty with wheels on ground and turning prop by hand to and fro. I've taken a video to demonstrate movement but not sure how or if I can get it on here so posted on youtube. Here is the youtube address

Could anyone confirm if acceptable amount of movement at this point - Aframe joint appears ok but I want to eliminate this prop movement before I worry about other areas (ie gearbox/transfer box). This movement at prop obviously exaggerated by the time you get to the wheel diameters. Am I chasing a non existent problem here, are any of these "tight"

That is common amount of movement found on older landy's and will result in some clonk at each gear change if you use your clutch like a switch.
Easing out the clutch each time like you do at start off is kindness for old transmissions and will limit the clonk.

Thanks Tottot - Mine has 80,000 so yes has some mileage on. If that is standard I'm happy, it is easy to stop it making the noise under most circumstances just didn't want the wear accelerating. Had visions of a diff change.

By way of feedback - I changed the A frame joint and that cured it (not the backlash but the noise on gear takeup). I should mention I only changed the joint regardless as the boot was split, however, on removal it was quite sloppy and its replacement has completely remedied the slight clonk I was getting.
