Just discovered I was posting in the wrong place, please bear with me I’ll suss it out over the coming decades!
Re-post in correct place: Any advice gratefully received. N/S back brake shoe retaining pin rusted through dust plate last week and pin and spring fell into brake hub and made a horrible scratching/ squealing noise, thought it was the hub until I started stripping it down and bits fell out when I removed the disc. Before jacking up I had a quick look on the net and it said leave suspension in normal, keys out, and leave a door open at all times, this worked and when I let the car off the jack and closed door it levelled itself out. Looking back I think suspension should be lowered before jacking as I had to put a decent sized piece of wood on the jack to get the height. Which is correct?
To solve the retaining pin problem I got a new pin, spring and twisty retainer washer thingy (slightly longer pin) and reverse fitted them from the back of the hub with a home made 1 inch washer to stop the pin falling through again this time fitting the twisty retainer washer thingy from inside the hub instead of from the back. (Twisty retainer washer thingy is an engineering term. Promise!)
When I do the oils and service I will be on a four poster so don’t think I will be jacking or disconnecting the battery, but if I am wrong please let me know. Forewarned.....and all that.
Thanks.

Thanks for that, didn’t find what you suggested but had a good read thru anyway. Will get my wife to have a look at the LZ site and teach me how to navigate it properly when she gets back from the shops, she left on Monday to get some bread mumbling something about love, range rovers, mumble mumble mumble...... she will be back soon.....

Yes, 2004 4.4 vogue, you know the one, you can see them in any petrol station if you hang about for 10mins!

Or more commonly seen in their natural habitat, :)
