Hi

I’m new to the forum, but have read quite a few posts on here over the last few weeks.

I recently bought a Discovery TD5 Auto. The gearbox has decided to give up after a few weeks and so I now have no drive.

I am looking for someone or a place who can fit a new box either from Ashcroft gearboxes or supply and fit.

I’m near cambridge.

Currently I cannot find anyone who will take it on, as they say it will take up the ramp for too long.

Any help and suggestions are much appreciated.

thanks
Ben

Welcome :)

Speak to Ashcrofts and they might be able to recommend a local garage, they did for me when I recently bought one of their boxes.

Thanks for the quick response’s.

I should have mentioned that I had already done that. They suggested mr4x4 in St Ippolyts.

He is the only one out of 10 plus calls that said will do it. But he wants £800 + VAT. Which would put the total cost around £2000. The same amount I payed for the disco. Is this a good price?

How much did you pay for yours to be swapped if you don’t mind me asking?

£800 and plus the £160 vat :( someone has to do a bit of shopping around.
Of course there other auto box suppliers that also fit.

If you're paying then whats the big deal on how long it sits on the ramps?

You paid 2k for a D2 with a hooky tranny (oooh err ) you got stitched up like a kipper lolz

Be easier to rag it round Marshalls in St Ives and burn it out for the insurance surely?

Either that or Try EC auto care in Bottisham they do road side recovery an all sorts there, well, they used to lol

You don't say in what way the gearbox has given up. It may be an easy fix, often it is an electrical problem rather than a mechanical problem in the box itself. Tell us what the symptoms are and what you have tried to do to fix it.

Hi Ben, there is a good place just up the A1198 of wich the name escapes me at the moment, although not used it myself, its on the right hand side just as you turn to go towards Bourn. I`m local to you in Fowlmere & have hawkeye too, should you need to check any codes out.

Dan.

Ben, if I was you I'd take up Dan's offer. yo may well find that replacing the box is not your only solution.
You might want to tell us the symptoms, the problem may well not be mechanical. There are tons of threads on here about dodgy gearboxes where the problem turned out to be electrical.
