Er, why?

Drum brakes were good but harder to dissipate heat. Disc brakes are a PITA when it comes to handbrakes. The handbrake shoes never get hot though so why bother converting to disc, especially with all the **** that flies up and is likely to foul it up. Maybe I am missing something but seems right up there with the EPB or fitting a handbrake to a canoe.
 
They argument for them is they are apparently less likely to get contamination trapped in them. But since they lose the self servo effect of drums, I can't imagine they hold any stronger. I've seen them fitted on Discos and Defenders in the past, not really sure I see any real benefit to them.
 
I was lucky as it still works, it rattled quite a bit and did have a front UJ go not long after. Given that I may have hit a car in front at the time broken shafts was deemed acceptable. I now understand the difference between an E-brake and a parking brake! :D
It doesn’t do it anymore, it would cut out coming off motorway to a stop on the roundabout like a dodgy quantity servo. It’s why previous owner was going to scrap it. Most of it was po meddling like the NRV In kinked cleat pipe didnt help, old battery, silicone spills etc etc.

I thought under the construction and use regs it was supposed to be capable of acting as an emergency brake. I'm surprised it can apply more torque to the props than low range.

Low range supplies torque to all the half shafts. Yes it is supposed to be an emergency brake. Applied gradually with the button pressed is ok slapping it on can snap half shafts.
 
They fail even with maintenance, a friends newly purchased Citroen decided to apply the EPB at 50mph, hand brakes do not do that.

No I can only agree with that.

So obviously a fault;) electrickery? Things fail even when maintained, but generally they will fail worse without.

L322 won’t apply EPB above xxmph if you do it uses the ABS until xxmph
As the EPB is actually at the back wheels and not the transferbox output then forces act differently. So are not relevant to the P38 design.

Look at all the surface area "grab" of the drum and shoe.

Then take a look at the disk and pad.

I'd hazard the drum and shoe would hold better assuming its adjusted correctly!

I don't know if JLR EPB's are the same, but on the Citroen, the EPB operates automatically when the car comes to a halt and releases when the accelerator pedal is pressed, unless you are unlucky and it decides it will not release.
You only need a component failure that can drive the motor and the EPB will operate regardless of speed.
I wonder how it can comply with the construction and use regs that require the parking brake to act as an emergency brake if it cannot be applied above xxmph?
I understand the difference between the location of the brakes on the P38 and the L322.
