Hi could any one give me any advice as how I can check the working of an alternator on my series 3 but with a badly fitted disco 200tdi engine . I am part way through a rebuild. The problem is as soon as I connect the battery the charging indicator light comes on without ignition switched on,When I bought the vehicle there was no wiring to alternator, the engine is not yet ready to run.all wiring has been checked, could it be the alternator is useless Thanks Steve.

There is a good section on testing alternators in manual and the wiring diagrams for petrol and diesel S3, site also has a defender manual for 200 tdi diagrams
I’ll be putting a 200di in mine over next month
I would guess wired wrong before dodgy alternator , the warning light is 23 in diagram below

Thanks steve2286w for all the info. I bought a new wiring harness from autosparks with wiring to suite a disco 200tdi engine. I also am making my series 3 with a 200di setup ,good luck with your build as mine has taken nearly 3 years as mine was basically a scrapper and now a money pit.

Best to think of the spend as putting £20 notes in the piggy bank :rolleyes:
I want to keep a battery and the oil bath air filter under bonnet how has yours been done
 
The red light will come on if there is a fault in the diode / regulator pack in the alternator .
Take the small wire off at the alternator and see if fault clears here is a pic of connections at alt 200tdi in case coupled up wrong.
