Disco 2 Advice before buying

Hello all,

Im after some advice on buying a disco 2.
Iv read up on here and my main concern is about economy, now before anyone says it im not looking for excellent economy like a small hatchback. I know to expect mediocre from an old 4x4 but iv read up and some people are saying they only get about 10-20mpg and others who are claiming 30+ mpg.


is there a particular version of the disco I should be looking for?

In all honesty if you are having to ask about the economy figures then you can't afford to run one, happy medium is around the 22 to 25mpg ranges, if you think you can eek out a few more by driving like a nun then you might as well not bother to be honest.

Make sure you budget for a proper code reader, hawkeye/nanocom as it will pay you back long term when it throws a spazz.

Oh and avoid sunroofs if you can or at least budget on getting them resealed and tip top as soon as you get it home as they end up leaking and the drain tubes block creating massive rot problems and ruined interiors very rapidly.

If I didn't have long comutes daily then it wouldn't bother me. I could settle for an average of 30mpg as my xtrail only does 33 on average as it is.

As said iv seen posts on here of people claiming 30 and higher. If that was true I'd be all for it but if what you say is true I think il have another look on the market for something else. Shame as iv really come round to the look of one

Averages of 30mpg plus are honestly pipedreams. Depends on how far you are commuting, and how much of it is Mway or dual carriage way, and I suppose how heavy footed you are. But you'll be lucky to see 30 mpg at all in an auto. At the end of the day, a D2 is designed to do all sorts of things, but economical commuting is not one of them!

23mpg is what we got from ours back in the days when I used to check it. You will see some figures that are higher than the manufacturers claimed figures, which are unlikely to ever be repeated.

Correct. Even with a really expensive MAF and MAP you will probably find that you may just get 30 mpg on a flat MWAY, cruising at less than the legal limit, (2000 rpm) but in general driving 23 mpg is quite typical. Even the handbook figures don't sugar-coat it!
It is what it is. It tows like hell, it carries tons of stuff easily, it gives you great vision on country roads especially over dry stone walls, it is comfortable and extremely capable once off a tarmac road. But it does weigh 2.1 tons and is only being pushed around by a 2.5 litre engine. Albeit 5 cylinders with a complex drive-by-wire system. But you will get better mpg in an old style 300tdi. But for less power.

If you’re questioning economics forget the d2, they can be money pits, trust me I know that all too well

You'd be better off with an older Range Rover converted to LPG.

I've kept a running total of every litre of diesel that's gone into my auto D2 for 70,000 miles. And I get 22 mpg over that period - about 25% pulling a 1400 kg caravan.

I can understand why you want rid of the x trail, I am guilty of having one (a t30 2.2 dci) it was the second worst car I've ever owned.
But to be brutally honest, if you're bothered about mpg/economy then this isn't the right car for you. I don't mean to be disparaging, by the way. But if you decide to get one there's plenty of help and advice on here WHEN it needs attention.

I don't know anything about x-trails. What made your x-trail so bad? Just curious.

A remap can help economy as long as you have a gentle right foot. My remapped auto can get a solid 26 mpg @ 70 mph on the motorway (which I consider pretty reasonable). General pootling with the occasional exuberance and I'm averaging about 24 mpg.

Compare that to my wife's 2.0 Ingenium diesel Jag XE and she never gets less than 50 mpg on a run, often gets 60+ and her record is 76 mpg over her 95 mile commute.

.... or a D1 or D2 v8 with LPG.

Manual, remapped, drive carefully and 30 should be doable.

I get low 20s with disconnected MAF*, auto, a shit commute.

*Currently sorting some running and economy issues, suspect overreading MAF as it is the original

Hi I know it has been mentioned here before but a genuine maf sensor is a worth while purchase if you’re going to keep the d2, (not vdo) but then they are bloody expensive unfortunately

I bought a genuine LR MAF and there was no determinable difference to the VDO it replaced.
Waste of money IMO.
If mine ever goes again, I'll just buy VDO.

Apparently it makes little difference to a 10p engine which takes most of its fuelling data from the MAP. 15ps are supposedly more sensitive to the MAF quality. source sierrafery.
