We have a non military 110 and for all sorts of reasons I need to shift the spare off the rear door. Apparently the bonnets are no longer strong enough so inside is one option but does anyone know can I legally mount it on the side. Not sure how but i want to have some idea before I contact the DVLA and or police

You will need a different mirror arm. Must be longer to get the view past the spare wheel.
Wolf military were fitted on the out side so must be legal to a point/year

you can get strengthening kits for the bonnets so you can mount a spare i thought?

I think same as flat, the bonnet is strengthened with some bolt in steelwork to take a spare. Wolf wheels were decided to be too heavy on the bonnets of wolfs (during trials) so got mounted on the side, but older military landys got their wheels upgraded and spare still on bonnet. This is the case with mine (heavy duty wolf wheels), bonnet is ok but does flex a little on bumps. Alloys and standard civi steels should be much lighter.

You'll need some biceps to lift the bonnet.

It’s not that heavy, but definitely change the scissor bonnet stand to the solid bar one

The side mounted spare wheels on the Wolfs messed with centre of balance, made it quite hairy on corners. That was why they used the Mantec rear mounts, to reduce the unwanted effects. Side mounted also messes with your rear vision. Also to mount them, you need the roll cage with the mounting kit.

At one time I thought about forming a wheel sized well into the side shelf in front of the rear nearside lights. Plenty of room under.

I have side mounted mine but on the inside 
Never gave the wing mirror a thought, good point
This is where we have it at the moment, however its a bit lumpy to lift over the drawer/ sleeping platform system we have but on the plus side fits ok and ain't going anywhere. WHEN we can afford it and it reaches the top of the list I do fancy alloy wheels

Spare wheel on the roof.
I don't like it on the bonnet and rear door is still a pain even with a swing away but roof mounting works well.
Getting it down is easy but best to have 2 to lift it on to the roof.

Hi The problem for us and on tne roof is that the vehicle is used for other stuff and we need ti get in multi storey car parks. Hence also no roof rack or roif tent
I guess we will stick to keeping it inside like yours. If we can ever justify alloys maybe the bonnet is an option

Why do you not want a rear swing arm?
Hi Ill try to explain, The whole of the rear is kitted out with modular units with sliding drawers and stuff. . To use the full width of the cargo area (the bit between the wheel arches) you either have to have a blank area or open the door wider than is possible than when you have the tyre on it. The 2 units between the wheel arches are just wide enough to house an oven cooker, water heating gyser in the left hand unit and fridge and stuff in the right hand unit..
I forgot to say even with a swing away arm the tyre is still in the way
The units we have over the whole of back area currently hold it in place but if this is to be its permanent home then some sort of additional restraint is a good idea
