Hi all...

Can someone help with this problem please...

I have been using my 2000 P38 4.0 auto daily until one day last week when it failed to start. I had just loaded the kids in the car to go away for the weekend, when I went to start it, it turned over but wouldn't fire. I tried a few more times and it kept turning over, but wouldn't fire and then the battery died. I unpacked the kids, chucked them in the other car and had a weekend away.

When I got back, I called the RAC who came out. He charged the battery and tried starting it. Same prob... turning over , but no spark. He checked the coil and it is not creating spark. He suggested Crankshaft senor. I had it towed to a local garage (my fathers body shop), and replaced the crankshaft sensor. This has had no effect what so ever. My father has checked fuses and relays the best he can, and there are no error messages on the console.

Does anyone have any ideas...

Thanks

Elton

yeah - mins did exactly the same couple of motns back - get a independat landrover dealer to hook it up to diagnostic eqpt

on mine the engine ecu had lost the coding from the becm? so it turned but didnt fire

he reset it - 10 mins job and it started first turn - job done £50

Hi.. Thanks for reply.... I have spoken to a LR independent garage about the problem, and they say if the engine check light on the dash lights up when ignition on, then the BECM is speaking to the ECU??!!!

My engine check light lights up so I guess it isn't that problem. I had a quick look today and I get an 'traction failure' message when trying to start it, but this might just be a red herring. The LR garage said I might have to get an auto electrician to have a look, or get it towed to them. Any more suggestions??

youd be better off getting it to a landrover specialist that has diagnostic equipment

that would be better than an auto electrician - who wont have the software to read or fix it

Check the fuel pump inertia switch isn't activated, it is located right-hand side of drivers footwell. This used to happen on my classic.

Hi, had the same problem with my diesel version. it turned out to be the wiring loom connectors in BOTH the drivers and passangers kickwells, check for green and furry connectors. I have removed both connectors and soldered the connections together (due to water ingress). It seems these cars are prone to this , the BeCM send the signal to 'unlock' the immobiliser but if the signal is not recived correctly, the system remains locked down. Might need a resync afterwards from someone with textbook (LR diagnostics). Cheers, Ian.
