Cleaning cylinder head ports...

Basically I am looking for ideas on how to clean the head ports and valves, while on the engine. I just purchased a 2002 Freelander TD4 with 112K miles on it. Accoding to the owner the vehicle was serviced at every interval. I was noticing a slight whistle, so I decided to check the turbo hoses. I found that the inside of the hose had oil in them, so I kept going...I attached a picture of the EGR. I discovered that the crankcase breather element was gone, as in not installed, just the little support basket, so I am guessing that is where all the oil came from. I have cleaned evrything else, except for the intercooler, mot ready to undertake that project yet.

Any help is appreciated!

I presume you have cleaned the EGR out, if not it can be cleaned with and old tooth brush and some Swarfega, then wiped clean with a rag, you can also remove the manifold, which consist of eight 10ml captive bolts, one 11ml bolt, & four 11ml nuts, unplug the MAP sensor, detach or remove the EGR with it. The manifold can be clean out with oven cleaner, you must make sure you remove the MAP sensor on the side of the manifold first, clean that with a rag with some carb cleaner sprayed on to the rag and wipe clean, remove the rubber seal from the manifold these can be re-used once you have cleaned it, oven cleaner sprayed into all ports, and inside the large area of the manifold, left to soak for at least four hours, then jet wash the manifold out, repeat if you have to.

To clean the head ports on the engine I would suggest you have a Terra clean, do not try and poke or pull any gunk from the ports once the manifold is off, a few photos below for you to help, also add the PCV filter if you do not have one. Arctic.

Thanks for all the info, I did get all the parts off and cleaned. I haven't touched the ports yet, I will have to look up the Terra clean you suggested.

I do have one of the BMW cyclonic oil seperators ordered to replace the breather filter, as well as an EGR bypass, figured if I had to order parts anyways, might as well upgrade.
 
I'd just scrape the goop out the ports and vacuum what drops onto the valve. I'm not convinced by Terra-Clean myself, but it might be worth a try.

Be aware that the BMW vortex filter, isn't a filter, and does pass a bit of oil to the boosted air, although the turbo will throw an amount of oil into the intake too.

Also be aware that the fitting of an EGR bypass is now an MOT fail in the UK, if it's spotted by the tester.;)
