2005 Freelander Td4 with manual gear.

When moving off from 1st gear (and rarely from 2nd gear if car is still rolling), sometimes there would be some kind of a one or two clacky kind of sounds, I could feel it vibrate through from under the car. Not a banging sound, more like some kind of a cracky feel. It would be like CLACK or it would be like CLACK-CLACK. Not every time I move off, mostly once or twice and depending on where I'm moving off from. Sometimes leaving home, sometimes from a traffic light when it turns green, but mostly often nothing happens when moving off when somewhere else.

I'm guessing maybe I'm getting sloppy with my clutch and accelerator pedal controls, and figure I should try to improve my clutch control. But I want to check if it is me or if there is a likelihood of something wrong with the car?

I would say it's the crank pulley if it only happening a low revs when changing 1st 2nd gears, what does it sound like if you leave it ticking over, or if you just rev the to about 1100 -1200revs report back, also look for any silver dust particles in and round the crack pulley area.

Check the front diff mount for play or perished / broken rubber. Front of diff can lift under power and touch floorpan / subframe.

Sorry, but I can only feel vibrations, not hear the sounds. I would have to get someone to come along for the ride and tell me about it.

I have a Haynes Owners Workshop Manual, number 5571. Can't find it in the index, any chance you could point me to which page, so I can look it up and check out the front diff mount you mention?

Oh great. I look it up in the Haynes manual, that's a garage job??

Not got that manual but if you look in chapter on Final Drive and look at removing the diff you'll see the front mount near where the prop fits to the diff. It is a rubber bush. If you get underneath the car and push the prop up and down at the joint with the rear diff you'll soon see if it is broken or worn.
