Help! I'm probably being thick here, but answers are only obvious when you know them...
I just tried to fill my TD5 fuel tank, but couldn't remove the filler cap. I put he key in, rotated it 180 degrees anti-clockwise, then pressed down on the cap and turned it anti-clockwise, but nothing engaged and the cap just spun. I couldn't fill the tank, so had to resort to filling the front tank instead (the joys of twin tanks on a 6x6!). Thinking about it, this is the first time I've tried to fill the rear tank, so I might be doing something wrong...any suggestions?

I just turn key and turn the cap anti-clock wise without pressing down, once key it turned the cap should grip to unscrew, it just turns without gripping without unlocking with key.

Probably a child proof lock, get a grown up to help you, lol

Turning the key clockwise just makes the top of the cap loose. Turning the key anticlockwise gives a hint that something may be trying to engage, but fails.
Guess the next question becomes: How do you get a failed cap of the filler neck?
 
From the locked position turn the key clockwise to unlock it but then turn it back anticlockwise and remove the key now try to unscrew the cap. This I had to do with my one when I first had it. Not sure if it is std td5 cap or aftermarket but I replaced it because of the faffing.

I have the earlier tdi style caps so cannot helr in the correct unlocking procedure. But removal of a broken one is fairly easy. The caps are plastic the filler neck is metal so as long as you are not planning on reusing the cap they can just be hacked off with a pair of pliers and some careful cutting/chiseling.
 
Final update - replaced the old cap with a new TD5 cap - problem solved. New opening procedure: turn key anticlockwise 180 degrees, then rotate cap anticlockwise to open tank. Closing is reverse, rotated cap clockwise until it clicks, then turn key 180 degrees clockwise and remove. All seems very straight forward, WHEN THE LOCK WORKS!
Old cap removed by simple brute force, no tools required, which is also a bit of a concern but probably indicates a fault with the original cap anyway.

When cap is off you can turn the key clockwise to lock position and remove the key then put cap on, it is easier to put on that way if key is on a key ring with other keys.
