hi looking for some advice again
Just got my freelander 1 2002 td4 back from the mot
Station all good full years mot on it
Just needed tyres/windscreen wipers/and SRS light cleared. As I had fitted a second hand steering wheel
Now the only problem I have is sometimes it won’t crank over all the lights come on but nothing keep trying it then for no apparent reason it starts
Then the fault disappears for days and returns I have a couple of spares freelanders in my yard just not sure what I should be replacing advice would be super thanks

Can you hear starter clicking? If yes then starter solenoid sounds worn out. Change starter or replace solenoid contacts. If no then check voltage at starter small spade terminal when key is in cranking position. Could be ignition switch or immob in that case. Report back!!

Hi andy starter solenoid in not clicking
But all lights come on as normal tried it
For about ten minutes no luck then held the key in the crank position after about ten seconds it just started will check the voltage at the starter and report back thanks so much for your help and time it is appreciated

Ok. If no voltage then most likely ign switch or bad contact / loose connection. There is a complex immobiliser circuit that uses chip in key. If chip not present then you get ignition lights but no crank. Also when you have checked voltage on starter spade terminal the starter relay would be next logical test.

It's worth pulling the Lucar connector off the starter, then refining it. Those do corrode, and removing/ refitting cleans the corrosion off enough to make the starter work again.

Thanks Andy and nodge I will remove the connection from the starter and clean them
Then check the voltage and report back thanks again for your reply’s and time

Thanks Andy and nodge I will remove the connection from the starter and clean them

Good course of action. I replaced solenoid contacts a couple of years ago but recently experienced an occasional non start which was obviously starter related. I thought "it can't be the solenoid contacts after not long changing them". Cleaned all the terminals and it's been great since.

Hi folks just a quick update as I said my starting problems occasionally it would not start/turn over it was the wire connections to the starter after weeks of touching/moving them with a screwdriver every time it wouldn’t start I took them off gave them a good clean and degreased them and tightened them back up no problem since thanks for the advice spot on as usual
