How long to change a power steering pump?

Hi guys, my 2001 freelander TD4 has had a few issues with the power steering not working at idle speeds so I picked up a second hand pump from a local breakers.

I will probably give it to a local garage to fit but was wondering how long it could take to replace?

I'm totally skint at the moment so need to know how much to budget for.

It should take no longer than an hour, with pump and fluid replacement

Hi I replaced the pump on my car myself - took about 2 hours but that was reading how to do it at the same time.

Pump was replaced and the power steering is fine now

BUT

When I accelerate I can hear a whooshing noise coming from the engine right infront of the driver. It sounds like air blowing, it only happens as I accelerate.

I'm presuming/hoping it is just a pipe that hasn't been refitted but its too dark to check now :-(

Any ideas?

Could be that lovely turbo on your TD4 whizzing as it should, and this could be deciphered as a whooshing noise.

It definitely didn't do it before the pump change and it is quite loud. It sounds like someone blowing hard, if that makes sense

Then it could be a split hose........ lift the bonnet, rev the engine while listening, or get a friend to rev it while you listen, and see if you can pinpoint the problem.

Sorted! Turned out to be a jubille clip on one of the hoses hadn't been tightened.

Hi I have to change my power steering pump and wondered if its possible to do it without raising the engine as described in the haynes manual ?

I never lifted the engine when I did mine on a Td4 - you have to take the pulley off and strip pump from bracket etc to avoid it.

Long time ago when I did it and can’t remember the full ins and outs now

Cheers ive had a look and can see there is enough access to get the pully off so toolkit out time to get dirty
