Hello guys im Russ a new member and looking for help. So on my home from work the Fan Belt Idler Pulley( not tension pulley) decided to seize up and burn the fan belt out and then mash it up and snap it, Now replaced. But now the engine as started making a clanging/clicking type of noise coming from within the engine! Ive took the belt off to just listen to the engine with no other pulleys going around. and its deffo inside the engine. its intermittent and sounds like there is something loose! I have had a socket on the crank to turned it by hand and every other full turn you can here it clattering against something. when i turn the engine off you can here it more as the engine comes to rest! Took the rocker cover off and all seems well in there! The belt snap and this noise may well not be connected! When i rev the engine its seems to fade a way slightly! Any ideas what the hell is going on here! Mileage is 180.000 thanks guys!

Possibly the crank pulley breaking up, it’s a metal and rubber construction and the rubber perishes causing symptoms like yours

Hi buddy thank you for the reply. i will check this too. may i add that you can feel the click in the wrench when you turn by hand slight

Hi... at that milage you better remove the front cover and check the timing chain's tensioner and guide cos they are made from some kind of plastic, i was "lucky" that the fan bearing's housing cracked and the cover was removed to be changed then my mechanic grabbed the guide cos it was suspect and it felt in pieces, around 170K miles at that time, i bought new chain too and comparing them the old one was about 4mm larger... not from my vehicle but just an example what can happen there:
