Hi,
Can anybody help with my problem. I have a 05 Range Rover TD6 with 20 inch alloys on. I have terrible vibration when stationary in drive. I have been told by the dealer this is due to the wheels, apparently diesels should'nt have 20's on but 19's are ok. has anyone heard of this or can any one give me any info.

Apparently it is the wheels. Dealers wont fit bigger wheels to TD6's as they know of this problem on the diesels. Petrols are fine but for some reason (the dealers dont know) diesels with wheels bigger than standard 18" vibrate whilst stationary ie. at traffic lights. 19" arent too bad but it is the 20" where i really shows. I know this when i bought my td6 and my pal who is dp at a dealership reports no end of comeback from people who asked for bigger wheels. A memo was sent in the end from land rover highlighting the problem. The crazy thing is Land Rover themselves offer no cause or solution.
 
I have the vibration problem & it is getting worse.There is a warranty mod that they will do for you - that is a total waste of time! They will now replace your front drive shafts? I asked how this could possibly be the cause as the vibration occurs when stationary - but hey, they new best and were wrong... However, it is now booked in again, for 3 days so the little ones can scratch there heads again. It has nothing to do with the wheel sizes - they only affect the brake cooling performance (if you are driving like Schumacher), it is i suggest either steering rack + pwr steering pump related or the torque converter. Either way, create said paper trail at the dealer and you'll be covered when its still a problem out of your warranty period!
 
I believe the problem is due to 'transmission shunt', when you select drive the engine is trying to propel the vehicle forwards but because your foot is on the brake it is being prevented from doing so and this starts a slight vibration! Most of us with auto's get a slight 'brrrr' noise when drive is selected!

On the diesel if you use the reccomended wheel/tyre sizes the vibration is damped out by the tyres, but if you fit 20 inch wheels/tyres the vibration will hit a certain resonance that cannot be damped out by the tyres and hence your issue.

This isn't a problem on petrol derivatives because the engines are that much smoother.

i have the same problem with my 06 td6
the said it was the 22 in wheels but i changed it to 18 ins
vibration still there
replaced front drive shafts
still there
transfer box
still there
now replacing whole gearbox
will keep ye posted

does anyone know if the Vibration can cause any damage to the car, i have just fitted 20" Original Stormers to a 2004 TD6 Vogue
 
I know this is an old post but my 2005 Td6 has the same vibration when stationary, in Drive and foot on the brake.
No issues when driving or in neutral.
I have 20" wheels but I struggle to see it causes the problem.
Seems worse when warmed up and after a few miles.
Anyone got an update or heard anything new?

I think the L322 diesel has electronically controlled engine mounts, so could be and interaction between the mounts and transmission shunt.

You say it does this in drive , what is the effect if you select the other positions ? Do you think it could be the torque converter?
It takes an experienced backside to feel where the vibration is coming from!!
