Quick question (I hope!) ive got to the point where I’m attaching my springs (gb paras) to the swing links. I got a new set of bolts and nuts for this and the question is should the lower bolt clamp the spring bush tightly between the links? The thread on mine stops with about 4mm gap. Apart from that I’ve also the normal problem with Richards chassis in that the other end of the spring doesn’t fit between the lugs. Thanks for any help!

It should clamp the bush, but make sure you lower the vehicle onto the ground before tightening the bolts.
And just hammer the lugs on the chassis a bit wider, until the bush fits between them. Use a block of wood, and hit it with a club hammer to avoid damaging the galv.
So I went to my local landy spare shop to look at the part in question, 537740. But the Bolts they showed me are the same short thread. Are the bushes gb use a lot narrower? As I say, currently at least 4mm float for the spring between the shackles? Have others come across this?

Not sure. With the standard set up, the bush will be tight between the plates.
Have you tried ringing the spring supplier or maker to ask? It may not matter that much.
The spring itself doesn't usually touch the plates with any kind of spring.

Are bushes same length at each end of spring ?
I assume you have already checked this but are the shackles you are using Definitly correct and fitted correctly? There are differant styles, some are just flat plate and some have spacers of varying size. E.g.
It is important the correct combination of shackle is used for each spring. Otherwise they won’t clamp onto the bush when tightened.

Never seen any that aren't.
There are a lot of variations in landy parts that have come about over the many years of production, series 2,2a and 3 cover 26 years.
The important thing is to eliminate side to side movement, use spacer washers. The spring hanger plates should be tight on the bush but not touch the edge of the spring.
The front ones have the lugs and seem to be fine. The manual shows the tears as just two flat plates with inner one being threaded. As I say if I use bolt 537740 )again shown as correct for top and bottom hole, I run out of thread before the plates touch either side of the bush. I’ll keep looking!!
