Freelander 1 ABS sensors - which one to buy?

This site contains affiliate links for which LandyZone may be compensated if you make a purchase.
Intermittent problem now becoming much more common and have been able to capture the fail event on telemetry. Will post u the data for interest tomorrow.

I’ll be fitting a replacement sensor in due course: as the one I got came with a 2-year guarantee, it will be interesting to see whether the eBay vendor will honour this... ;)

Here's the telemetry plotted in Excel:
Wheel speed telemetry - failing RF ABS sensor.png

I've highlighted with the red box the point at which the right front wheel sensor stopped working. While the other ABS sensors were recording wheel speeds of 15-25 kph, the right front had dropped to zero for 4.5 seconds (orange trace). Also, the right front ABS signal seems to have a greater variance compared to the other sensors - most obvious when you scan the raw data, but visible on the above trace between 80-95seconds.

I'm going to check the purchase date and find the eBay vendor details now and see where this gets me... ;)

I've sent this message to the seller:

Hi,

I purchased this ABS wheel sensor in Feb 2017, fitting it a few months later. It has worked well over the last 12-18 months, but is now failing (I have attached the telemetry trace from the ABS ECU - the 4.5 second failure of the ABS sensor is highlighted within the red box). The sensor is safely in the hub and all wiring is in good condition.

I purchased the sensor with the understanding that it carried a 24 month warranty - are you able to provide a replacement?

Many thanks

Rob

For interest, this is the sensor I purchased: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261990402199 :)

Is yours an earlier inductive pickup model, or a later electronic pickup? The listing says it fits all years, but they changed design in 2002.5 ish.

2001 - so the earlier inductive type Nodge

I did buy a replacement inductor ring for the drive shaft, but didn’t fit it at the time as the one that was there seemed to be in reasonable condition.

As long as the old ring was complete and not split, then it'll be fine. Did you push the new sensor down fully, so it was in contact with the ring? Too large an air gap can give intermittent pulses from the pickup .

Yes - although I have yet to check the gap now; I doubt that it would have moved much though!

I have been in touch with the eBay vendor: they're happy to send a replacement, but need me to return the original first? Logistically, that makes little sense, but at least it appears that they're prepared to honour their warrantee commitment :)

Good news on a couple of fronts.

1. The eBay vendor sent out a replacement following payment of a refundable £10 deposit on receipt of the faulty ABS sensor.

2. Managed to get the misbehaving old senor our reasonably easily (old 11/16 and 16mm metric spanner’s about perfect to evenly lever old the sensor) - and replaced with new.

Three amigos have gone and I have a telemetry trace with the new sensor that I’ll conert to graphical format and post later :)

The 18 month old sensor looks okay externally, but the rubber components are shot. Don’t the Chinese know the recipe for decent rubber???

So good news so far! Let’s hope this sensor lasts better than the previous one - and I’ll let you know if I get refunded! :) So far, fairly pleased with the experience...

Update on the eBay sensor - I returned the faulty sensor, and I have been refunded the £10 deposit!

Great news: the warranty worked! Hopefully the replacement will have greater longevity than the original :)

The three Amigos: the never ending story.

As posted on my other thread, the left front sensor has just started throwing faults. Ugh.

I need to buy a new one. Do I buy another from the vendor I got the warranty replacement from, or do I try o e from another supplier and hope for better quality?

Thoughts?

There are loads of 20 year old Freelanders that have never had a sensor fail - mine included (I believe). When I had my Amigo codes read (was a faulty modulator) the LR Indie I took it to said he had LR ABS Sensors that have been clogging up his shelves for years because they don't fail and people don't need to buy them.

That might be an indication of which ones are best to buy - mind you I've never looked at prices and genuine usually have that "times 5" price effect!

That's not a bad idea and I was thinking that when you mentioned standard sensors. Were it not for the near impossibility of removing sensors from the hub (they get well and truly stuck because of corrosion), that would really be a good option. Would be easier to get the whole hub, complete!

You hit the nail right there. Swap the hub. :p

Rather than fighting with the hub nut - take the driveshaft as well!!

(and have a look see if the wishbone is in decent nick )
