Hi

Defender Td5 starting /running problems and generaly being an absolute barstool !
Difficult to start, even worse when warm where it won't start at all .Changed in tank pump for new genuine one, changed fuel filter, taken filter housing in bits and cleaned , changed injector copper washers and o rings (for genuine),the wireing harness is letting oil down to the ÉCU and have ordered a new one but no amount of cleaning in the meantime seems to make and difference and the basterd still won’t start easy ! You have to crank it over for about 10 seconds was running sweet as up to suspected pump failure where it was switched off after a long run and wouldn’t start again .

I have loads of TD5's and ones never done my box in like this one ????? ........ help ......... please ......
Thanks in advance

Have you any fuel leaking under the bonnet? The fuel pressure switch will give you those symptoms if it has a minor leak at the gasket or pipes in or out. Its passenger side of the block behind the air plennum and fuel cooler, above the alternator. Know from experience when Instripped a thread on my new AMC head last month. Was bad to start but ran ok once running, once fixed first turn of the key

That's a new one to me ! But thanks all the same and will have a look but no obviouse in your face leaks !

FPR is on Drivers side in the uk, but if you have had a lot of oil down the injector wiring it may have found its way into the ECU, you might have to open it up and clean it out.

Update on my mates TD5 Defender that has been the garage for over a year and still not running after 18months !!
It has had a new siemens fuel pump, filters, fuel pressure regulator, MAF sensor, new genuine injecteur washers and o-rings,injecteur harness, starter motor and the bitch is still not starting correctly !
Ignition on, pump Noisy, you purge the fuel system a few times, pumps quitens down and it will start so obviously a fuel/air leak problem there, ignition off and it will start again no problem. Drives no problem, stop it when warm and it won't start ? Bumps off no problem, thought this might be the starter motor, new starter motor and still won't start. Diesel temperature is 20° C less than the water temp !
So 2 problems here , logic says to now change the diesel filter head for the air leak/diesel return but at 100 snakes my mate is proper ****ed with spending money on it and not starting when hot is another mystery ?

Any help ? Please !

My D2 would do this. stop after it was hot, would not restart, leave it 10 mins and it would restart.

Issue was the crank position sensor.

Cheers
Thanks for that I have another TD5 so it would be quite easy to swap crank sensor over to try it . So much money and time has been spent so far that I just don't want to waste anymore time and money on it with out there being at least a fair chance that it's that .

Sounds like fuel pressure regulator issue to me too. Had one recently that had bad fuel, replaced injectors as we're doomed. Then fuel pump failed but still wasn't running perfect as would take abit to prime and would cut out after about 5 minutes when warm. Changed the fuel pressure regulator as well as the fuel filter housing as somebody had removed the check valves in it.

All back together and perfect since.

Thanks for that ! Fuel pressure regulator is new ! I think that your right and it's the fuel filter housing ! I have another 110 TD5 so I can swap it over first from that to see it it's that .

!
Just changed crank sensor and still won't start when hot ! Well it will start but you have to crank her over for about 30 seconds

I swopped over the crank sensor, ÉCU and diesel filter houseing from my TD5 and it’s still the same . The new pump makes a racket when first switched on and then quitens down . Will reluctantly start after about 30 mins of cranking ! Then runs and drives perfectly , will immediately start when cold but not when hot . I thinking it’s either new faulty pump or low compression but it doesn’t smoke or use any oïl ?

Might be a faulty fuel temperature sensor or plug/connection that is plugged in to the Fuel pressure regulator, they are cheap,

Might be a lot of things, I'd start by checking the fuel pressure (low and high) rather than changing things willy nilly. This will at least help confirm your (replaced) pump is good.

Could it be an earth problem messing up the electrics when hot under bonnet. A jump lead from battery negative to engine would be a quick check.
