Disco 2 Query about remapping

Hi guys, first post,

Im about to purchase my first land rover, a d2 with a few mods on it.
The owner says it has a stage 2 re-map on it but has no proof, is there any way of me actually finding out if this is the case? or do i simply line up next to another d2 with a stage 1 and see who is faster haha?

It has an egr delete and a full de-cat exhaust which from my understanding is needed for stage 2 if anyone can confirm this?

Will probably be posting a lot more now im making my life more difficult with a landy in my life haha

Apart from the obvious like, "Was there any paperwork with it?" this post will be short and sweet cos I know only a tiny bit about it. but I may be able to help you search for stuff.
If yours is an early D2 you cannot remap the existing ECU, the chip inside it has to be replaced with one that has been remapped or a re-mappable one. When I had a problem with my ECU (accidentally dropped it, duh) I opened it up and found a chip piggybacked onto the original, or maybe not the original one. so some previous owner had chipped it a bit, I suspect cos he used it to tow a caravan all the time. So, opening up your ECU and posting pictures of it on here together with the serial number on the side of the ECU will tell others more knowledgeable than me, stuff which they can then use to tell you. Other than that, try using the search words like "chipping a Disco 2 TD5" and you may get help. Best of luck and enjoy.

Don't know how the seller will feel about you taking a screwdriver to the ECU! ?Ask him who remapped it for him. That might tell you something. Still, if it drives, drive it home, if it feels a bit sporty for a Disco then it may well be mapped. Try to find someone with a standard one who'll let you drive it, then you can compare. Even if it ain't mapped, you can get it remapped if that is your bag. How much is he asking for it, if you don't mind telling us?

If it’s 02 it’s mappable, no chip to remove

I meant I will look at it IF I buy it haha, my friend does has one with a stage 1, so gonna give him a go an see what he thinks

Stage is meaningless, that is the tuners jargon.

Usually means that they replaced the intercooler as well as remapped.

If you can overtake - remapped
If it is under 12 seconds to 60 - remapped

170bhp to 180bhp seems to be a sweet spot for the TD5

Hello, the way to see if is remapped would be to read the Ecu map with a nanocom, if it is tuned it’ll be a Tun file which is basically locked to you’re vin number on you’re ecu

As above, it should have an uprated intercooler and go very well. But when it comes down to it you have no proof, so pay accordingly!

Mine had a tuning box on it, I’m not sure the auto box really understood where the power was coming from but it did go really well. Minus the box it is really slow unless you really ask it then it’s just quite slow!

People have a tendency to cover it with waxoyl, I looked at a D2 a couple of years ago on a forecourt, chassis looked lovely but I managed to put my finger through it without much force which was quite shocking really

The guy said he was going to underseal it but left it as is so the person buying it can check it properly, im pretty sure he is including the stuff to do it in the sale which im hoping is a good sign.
From what iv been told its a messy job, but i dont mind gettin dirty to do it to be honest if it turns out to be decent as i want it to last.

If the vendor knows who mapped it, a phone call to them with the reg number should confirm what map they put on it.

I do not think that the most important factor is if the car has remap or not. It costs aboout 300 pounds (if I am right) so not the biggest cost which can occur if you buy a used 17 year old car. The most important is its general condition, rust, oil leaks, how it drives and if all things are OK you can buy and even if it has the remap or not you can do it later.

I hope not. underseal is a death sentence - traps water and rots steel for fun. The correct products will, of course do a proper job - and a search on here will find "our" recommendations .....

+1 - the rear of the chassis on a D2 is such a known weakness - I'd start there and worry about the rest later - Neilly's checklist, linked to above, contains damn good advice.
