i have a new 71 lightweight .pull the red lever back & 4wd is engaged , push it forward the yellow is released but the yellow does not stay down is this a difficult fix ? not that high range 4wd is important to me !

yes it should stay down once pressed .but i don think its engaged .i am refering to high range !
right it will only stay down in high ,if it doesnt check the shafts under the tin cover arent sticking, and if you jack one front wheel up you can tell by turning the front wheel if it engages 4x4 when pressed as wheel will no longer spin, the yellow knob pulls a pin out of the center shaft of the 3 at the front which once out lets that shaft slide ,yellow knob cant be pulled up once shafts moved till the hole in the shaft is realigned by pulling red lever back

no it does not engage i can tell ,but will it take a lot to fix ?
pushing yellow knob down doesnt engage the front axle so a wheel will spin if jacked off the ground but other wheel on the ground, if so remove the tin cover theres 3 bolts holding the cover , 1 pivot bolt for yellow knob lever ,and see if the center shaft is seized

Pushing the yellow knob down pulls a pin up that lets a spring push a shaft. The shaft sticks. Oil it and move it. Its been left unused for too long. Use all the levers regularly and they stay oiled.

Use this to check all shafts move to correct positions. Best method I found to release was to lubricate and tap ends of shafts with mallet or hide hammer they are worked by springs so as they start to free spring pushes back out after tapping

right ! today ,had a go. this rover is stuck in 4wd .the yellow stick is being drawn down when i push the red range lever forward into high .if i hold the yellow up after releasing it. it wont go forward into highagain .the appearance at first is the yellow wont stay down when in high but thats because its stuck down itself ie its stuck in 4wd & yes i have been in the mud to test it .ive got lots of mud !
