Freelander 1 TD4 3 amigos ?

I have 3 amigos on, we have checked with plugin and nothing showing
my mechanic seems to think it may be one of the speed rings on any one of 4 wheels
the engine management light is on and the brake warning as well, and I have no speedo from time to time
there is a noise from the 2 back wheels when you pull away rather like traction control or hill decent operating, then the car runs fine,any ideas greatly appreciated

Depending on the diagnostic system you’ve plugged in, the chances are you won’t see anything! Most aftermarket diagnostic widgets will only read the engine ECU and won’t read the ABS system.

I have a pscan, which can read the ECU. On mine, I’ve had problems with road speed sensors and with the yaw sensor. Without the diagnostics, it would have been extremely challenging to identify the correct sensor faults.

Problems with the rings on the drive shafts can occur, but currently you don’t know which wheel you need to look at and without dissembling the hub, a thorough inspection can be difficult...

Speed rings were used up until mid 2002 when magnetic sensors were used. The older rings can break and can be seen without disassembly with a bright light and a small screwdriver to see if they move when poked! If they do they have snapped. Decent diagnostics will tell you which wheel sensor if it is that.

Thanks for thanks guys, mines a 2005 facelift, does this have rings that can be viewed though a hole?

If your mechanic is going to start charging you to fix it by a hunch its a speed ring, then you need a different/decent mechanic.

It needs to be put on a Freelander capable diagnostic to find out what's wrong. If speedo is going then its probably multiple ABS sensors - but you need to find out which and confirm nothing else is caput in the system.

EML is probably something different, but a cheap ODBII dongle should get the codes for that on a 2005 car.

No. The reluctor rings are integral with the wheel bearings and seldom fail, unless damaged when new bearings are fitted.

You need to use a diagnostic that can read the ABS ECU codes. However if your speedo is also not working, then that suggests a fault on the CAN bus. You need a proper diagnostic read, before going further.

Thanks chaps, he has just texted me and will swing by and get it plugged in again
the first time he tried it showed up multi faults on both ecu and abs, which he cleared
so maybe this will now throw something new up

What reader is available that will read the codes for ABS faults?
I currently have intermittent 4 amigos, but thought I could actually diagnose the fault rather than just replace brake switch and sensors just in case they are kaput

The Icarsoft I930 will read the ABS module, and most other modules too.

Update:
iCarSoft i930 arrived. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to think my car actually has ABS so I wasn't able to diagnose a fault.
The 3 amigos + brake warning light were staring me in the face, but the reader couldn't see anything, in auto or manual mode.
It'll be going back.
Any other suggestions?

I probably would have bought that but it doesn't have support for my Disco 4.
However I might change my mind of I can't find something better...

I’m not that familiar with the icarsoft but I’m sure it *should* work - perhaps the reason it doesn’t connect is telling you something???

Either way, I think you may need to try another diagnostic reader. Where are you? If near north London, I’d be happy to connect my pscan to read any faults...

The Icarsoft should com with the ABS ECU. I would check the D connector for spread contacts, as this can happen. My own I930 coms with my current 05 SE facelift, an my old 01 V6 too, so it's not the device.
