Hi all
Apologies if this has already been covered I just purchased a Freelander 1 td4 127000
Low for a 2003 very good service history Low owners
I have noticed on start up that there is a lot of blue smoke which clears after a few revs tick over is irregular to start with and on a few occasions when starting from cold revs waver up and down them cuts out I re start ok Rev engine and I get a big blue cloud
Car runs well with no issues when warm no smoke or vibrations etc
Many thanks in advance

Blue would usually indicate it’s burning oil. Have you checked the oil level to see if it’s dropping? Sure someone with knowledge of your engine will be along in no time!

You could have a slight leaking valve guide oil seal. You could also have in injector that is bleeding down into the cylinder over night. You could actually have both issues, where the fuel dripping into the cylinder, as liquifying the oil from the leaking valve guide, allowing it to burn off on starting.
It could also be that oil from the intake system is contaminating the cylinder, which again liquidated by dripping fuel, which is burning off on starting.

If it's any consolation, mine has been doing the same thing since I bought it over 3 years ago. Providing the blue smoke clears after it's warmed up, then IMO it's no cause for concern. You my decide to have the injectors refurbished, to eliminate the bleeding down when stopped. I'm going to continue to use mine until I've no choice but refurbish them. I'm definitely not messing with oil seals though.
