Posting for a mate !

Who's just bought a V8 Discovery 2, approx 120k on the clock with the 4l thor engine. When he bought it a couple of months ago all was good but it has starting consuming more and more oïl . Last trip he did he used 8 liters of oïl to do 350 miles :(:(:(

Starts and runs perfectly, pulls like a train but smokes, has an LPG conversion that works perfectly, no oïl in coolant, coolant level stable, no strange noises or oïl leaks etc .......

He has tried different oïl's but even 20w 50 does'nt make any difference. compression test shows approx plus or minus 180 psi on all cylinders.
Thinking it might be scrapper rings ? Valve seals ? but would like to get head around how it was'nt useing any oïl and now is before going any further ??

Thanks in advance :):)

For that much oil I'd say rings. Valve seals generally weep - you'll get a puff of smoke on startup after its been stood a while but normally clears after a few seconds

Strange one this, RV8's are not known as oil burners. I had a 3.5efi with inter-galactic mileage, well down on power as a result but still only used minimal oil.
Hopefully others here will be more helpful to you.

For it to losing that much oil, it's either burning it, or píssing it out somewhere..

Whats the exhaust like?

Give her a boot to redline and check the exhaust, any blue smoke?

Stem seals can leak but for it to lose that much through them it would be very apparent..

Compression seems good so unlikely to be rings.

Oh and what did the sparkers look like?

Burning oil is very apparent on plugs..

Thanks for your recent replies as I’m
Absolutely stumped on this one ? Plugs look good on the left bank but on the right bank they are all black and carboned up . Runs **** on petrol and better on gas !

it does sound like worn piston rings with your carboned plugs.
and clean out your plastic PCV valve.... I tell everyone to do this regardless. :p
