TD5 Sunroof Seal

I have the normal Discovery problem of the Sunroof leaking.
I have removed the head lining and checked the drain off pipes either side of the sunroof and they dont appear broke or to be leaking.

It looks like the water is coming through the seal itself. Has anyone replaced the seal and can give me some info on how to do it. Do I need to remove the whole sunroof unit or is it hopefully a lot easier than that.

Also any idea the best place to buy the seal, seen some for sale on ebay for £20.

Craig, you'll find plenty of seals on E Bay, and it is straight forward to change one !!

I have already taken the search option and not been able to find a full explanation for the job I am intending to take on. Hence the question.

After trying a number of Landrover forums, I have found this one to be the most friendly and informative. Hopefully this is still the case. Nobody is a fully trained Landrover Mechanic overnight, thats why the internet and Landrover Forums exist so that we can share some knowledge and hopefully learn how to maintain our pride and joys.

try a smear of vasaline and check out mantamads thread for where to put your silicone!

then spend yer £20 on ebay

DO NOT under any circumstances buy the seals from ebay. They are a rip off. You can buy them from your local stealer for £11. One of the few occassions when stealer is cheaper.

Thanks for the info, I will get a price from my local Landrover stealer.

As recommended by battenburg I will try the vaseline and sealant method first.

But I could do with some info on how to exactly replace the seal. Looking at the threads lots of people have done it, but no info on how to do it.

you need a torx wrench, take off the trim surround on the inside headliner... it will expose holes to poke your torx through. undo the 4 bolts, Take off the glass panel and sit in your new seal from above.

It is possible to do without removing the glass but a lot more fiddley

Thats what I needed to know.

be careful though, if it leaks now you can be sure as hell you wont get the glass aligned properly first time around, an it'll leak again!

I could actualty see daylight though mine! my mate noticed while sitting behind the driver's seat...

never sat there myself so hadn't noticed... and this was before I took the glass off!!

Its certainly worth replacing the seal if its in a bad way but remember that the seal is not meant to be water tight - just to keep the worst of the water out, some water will seep through and into the drain channel around the glass.

Manta, you should start the ultimate discosunroof guide in the common questions and ask accy to make it a sticky...

With the roof fully open, a smear of common old vaseline helps provide a better seal

Also good to use (very sparingly) on the door seals and other rubber seal type items etc, helps prolong their life, cheaper than silicone spray and a lot cheaper !!

no you dont need to remove the headlinning to do the seals, where is it leaking! there is 2 drains tubes in either corner they block, or the sunroof looses the waterproof seal on the roof and water gets in there!

Right here mate, I've searched everywhere online and cant find conclusively the list of things to check first?

Drain blocked,if you open the roof and look very hard or a peice of stiff wire and poke you can find the exit in the drain, they block up, ive just done one on the one i am doing up, rear sunroof was blocked drivers side, but ive just taken all roof linning out and re sealed both sunroofs etc, but drain tube was blocked, common fault, it wont be the sunroof seal, either blocked drain or sunroof needs re sealing to the roof,

So how do the sunroof roof drains become blocked? Normally the entrance is closed and sealed by the sunroof class, I suppose if you in a habit of leaving the glass open something would find its way into the pipes entrance, difficult as they are small.
But the drains are not important unless the sunroof is opened with water laying on top of the glass, that’s what they are installed for.

road grimme etc, twigs stuff like that, depends on the enviorment where the car has lived i would think
