I have got an ex military petrol engine in the series 2 now and just changed the oil.
6 litres in the engine and an extra 0.85 for the filter. It has a oil cooler fitted which I am keeping but do I need to add more oil to account for it?
When it's been sitting the dipstick reads OK but when I check it just after it's been running its a bit on the low side presumably because of the oil still in the cooler, I don't want to over fill it so any ideas?
Thanks
RJ

It rather depends on whether the oil in the cooler drained when it got changed. It will take more oil becuse of the cooler, but in the end the dipstick is the decider as the target is the correct oil level in the sump, the volume follows to get that.

Yes I know what you mean but when the engine is off the oil in the cooler drains to the sump anyway so when its cold it looks full when its running the cooler fills up again and the sump level drops accordingly.
Just don't know the right way to do it, I don't reckon it would do any harm left as is but wondered if anyone knew the proper thing to do.

It is the military big bore cooler behind the rad? That finned tube thing? My first thought is does it all drain when the engine stops, it may do or it may hold the oil a while. If it requires a different technique to dip the oil it should be somewhere in the mil manuals or perhaps a different dip-stick part number. You could try dipping it after an overnight stop then running a while and dipping straight away and see how much it changes. Mine has had it removed as the electric fan is now where it would be.

Yes its a big bore finned gismo in front of the rad, probably holds half a litre if not more. I had thought of getting rid of it but I don't know if that would cause pressure to build up if I blanked the outlet on the filter housing.
I reckon 7 litres of oil has got to be enough for any 2 1/4 petrol engine.

I asked this question on the EMLRA Forum and the answer wasn't simple. Basically 12½ pints for an engine with an oil cooler. Use the dipstick when the vehicle is parked on level ground after the engine has been turned off for 10 minutes.

The dip stick indicates if the pump can suck up the available oil in the sump when running.
If it’s low on the dipstick when driving your asking for trouble. If it ain’t, all will be well.

Ok so thats it I've had enough of sodding about with this poxy oil cooler.........
Does anybody know if it would cause any problems if I just blank it off where the feed comes out of the filter housing or would that cause pressure to build up?
One of the feed pipes to the cooler has sprung a leak and I'm sick to death of looking at it:mad:
