My alloy inlet was pretty clean when I took that off just oil pushed through from turbo over years. From what I could see from the top of the valves they looked decent.
I’m in no way going to put water in my chambers. It’s getting mixed up with the original conversation.

‘95 push rod engine is old to me? It is running a lot better with just basic maintenance and getting crap out from when I first took ownership.
Il have the head off one day then we will see :)

You don't have EGR so the inlet side should be pretty clean. By the way it is not a push rod engine, it has a very nice overhead camshaft.

Ah, makes sense.
When I am wrong, i am very wrong. :D

Lucky to have you watch over me

So by modern we mean around EGR/Cat-ish, 90’s on? And yes I know Volvos and things had them before that but not enforced.

EGR will screw up any engine if left long enough. Newer ones with very small gas/mixture margins are better, but still a bloody pain in the arse if not looked after. Manufacturers are trying to make them unworkable by home mechanics.

Put some good Diesel in it and take it for an italian tune up..

So long as that knocking ain't anything serious and you end up launching a rod out of 'er ;)

I agree that’s why I chose pre EGR P38. Don’t modern vaporise oil during normal running also so you have to keep adding it?
My P38 never drunk a drop FairPlay BMW, If level goes down tiny bit it’s in intercooler worst case.

Good point I forgot about that  haven’t drove her yet but knocking is still there on Tickover. It was so rattly and rough when I had it couldn’t hear it over everything else so it’s not too loud and don’t think it’s too serious. @Bagshot said it seems similar to what he had - turned out to be head but I have no symptoms of head problems

Still in garden waiting for UJ, does give me couple hrs a night to work on it though as it’s there ready when I get home

Look under her skirt - nice painted axle....
Pretty girl ;)

I should paint them black so you can’t see them or wrap rubber around them :D

Maybe one day. First thing I had to do was rip it out to get MOT keep it from being scrapped. There was other things to do so it was that or death for it.
I’ve never had EAS so don’t miss it and it’s nice and high, much comfier than a defender. Will take more than set of bags get it going proper

I disconnected the EGR years ago.
Go to all the bother of a cooled turbo to force more oxygen in and then add some hot carbon dioxide/monoxide?
Can't really see the point of them. Apart from as a sop to supposedly green compliance.
I cleaned it all up to make sure it was properly closed then took off the wee vacuum pipe. It has been through 3 MOTs like that, emissions (tho' not required for MOT) have always been well within limits.

Incidentally there was an article in the Telegraph new car supplement a few weeks ago about how an old car will always be 'greener' than changing it more a new 'eco' model. In the author's opinion 'the greatest con the auto industry has ever pulled off'.

Yes fair point I won’t go under there like that . There are two axle stands under the front (not huge, should hold a corner but Henry is right they are few years old and not really for p38’s) plus the trolley to keep weight off them. I did have the wheels on so there’s plenty of room as it’s lifted. My dogs go out there though so block is gone first thing  thank you :)

If I drive my P38 for rest of my life, regular oil change/service tyres etc, it in total will produce less damage to the environment than what pollution comes from production of a new car nevermind driving it for the few years it will go okay. The ore dug out of the ground to make metal the oil sucked out to power shipping it back and fore all over the world half dozen times before it gets to factory alone. They tune them so much to meet bull**it criteria on the cheap they miss the point that in this day and age where we are thinking about flying to mars it’s not hard to make a decent engine that will run healthily for more than 6yrs, it’s just not good business

Rant over, bed time for me

I also pull the vac pipe off the EGR and put it back for the French MOT. The latest update to the MOT is much stricter on diesel emissions, so I'm not sure it will pass with the EGR disconnected. Not sure if the UK is implementing the new EU test procedure for diesels.

The EGR is never active in an MOT test. It should not operate at idle nor does it operate on acceleration. So the emissions test does not involve it. Emissions do not change. In the UK diesels are tested for smoke only not for emissions.

True, but the tester checks for the EGR being in place and on newer cars they plug in and can tell if it is operational.

Summary
It’s had a good few hundred hard miles put on it and the result is what I’d hoped for as far as oil contamination is concerned, tapping sound needs more investigation.

Definitely a gray rather than black as @landowner had with kerosine. I don’t think repeating the flush would do any good from now on, regular oil changes will keep it clean easily I should think. I am impressed on how much it has cleaned as I doubt just the 2changes with oil alone would have made a mark on the original condition.

Thank you to everyone that has voted/participated. I value your consideration and opinions greatly and feel very privileged to learn from you all.
