Disco 2 No water flow to heater element

Hi
Just changed water and steering pump.
Now I’ve a new issue. No water seems to be flowing around the system. No water to heater element nothing.
Runs perfect but only top of engine hot. Do I have an airlock ?? Or thermostat issues.
When I remover pipe to heater element there is no water flow when I start engine.
If I drive car it overheats.
Any ideas

Did you fill and bleed the system as in the book by lifting the tank above the bleed hole ?

5. Remove bleed screw from top hose.
6. Unclip the bleed hose from the battery box.
7. Unclip the expansion tank from its mounting
bracket, remove the expansion tank cap and
raise the expansion tank vertically 10 cm (4 in).
Retain the tank in this position.
8. Slowly fill the system through the coolant
expansion tank until a steady flow of coolant is
emitted from the bleed hole.
9. Fit the bleed screw, then, with the expansion
tank still raised, continue filling the system until
coolant level reaches the cold level mark on
expansion tank.
10. Fit expansion tank filler cap, fit the expansion
tank to its mounting bracket

`... in addition to the above, after that whole procedure was respected start the engine, undo partially the bleed screw as to let the coolant weep then ask somebody to keep the engine rev'd to 2000rpm untill no bubbles come out near the bleed screw then tighten it back... now the system is airless so if you still have flow issues it means it's clogged somewhere or you have a combustion leak into it

Will I need to empty the system to do this and start again or can I just lift up and fill now.
Head gasket changed last month so that’s all good. Just changed the steering ad water pump and have this issue of no water going to heating element and overheating.
Will do this tomorrow and see what happens. Could radioactive be blocked as I did move it bout a lot to change the hydraulic hoses ? Think I’ll flush whole system and have a look at thermostat before I refill properly this time.

No need to empty the system, carry out that procedure as it is and remember that's the correct way

Do you think d be better changing the thermostat as well. Seems really odd that i can remove heater hose and there is no water flow even when motor reved up.
Slightly confused by this. Will start with bleeding system and go from there.

Are you sure you didnt fit the thermostat the wrong way cos it's not uncommon and the main valve is instead of the bypass then

I’ve not touched it yet but always had strange problems with the heating. Doesn’t look like it’s been changed ever. How will I know which way round it should be. Just seems strange that before I changed the water pump car took ages to heat up but now it’s not right as heats up straight away but all hoses lower down stone cold and car over heats when you drive it.

Think I’ll flush whole system and look at thermo and then refil.

A good idea, then don’t just look at the thermostat, replace it, and refill slowly with the method stated in the post above.

D1 & D2 are slow to warm up, it’s a Diesel engine thing unfortunately, there’s a few threads on that subject quoting 3 or 4 miles and longer, where the petrol engine around 1 mile or so as in can confirm.

So filled correctly now and up to temp. Drove it overheated.
Bottom of thermostat is red hot top and hose to radiator and radiator stone cold.
Thermostat Would be my guess. Still no flow to heater and this concerns me as thought even with thermo shut there would be.
Ordered thermo so just waiting now.

Rip out the stat's internals, fit back the empty casing and see then

If you've connected the pump's hose on the stat's bypass port, you have effectively isolated the pump and it cannot draw coolant into the system. Hence why you hardly see any flow except for those created by thermal convection.

Update
So stripped pump off the car and found the problem. When I’d put the steering pump in the drive flanges were not lined up properly and snapped off so no drive to the pump.
New pump on order now.
