Hello Everybody,
I've posted this in the general section as I'd really appreciate views from all Landy people who've ever had or thought about this member of the LR family.
I need a second car which is big enough for two kids and a big dog, but small enough for the missus to drive without moaning. She won't look at the Range Rover or a Defender but seems to quite like the Freelander which would be a good compromise for me as I don't want a bog standard boring MPV.
They are of course only available at a certain age now, but I have the chance of a good 56 plate HSE petrol V6 with only 50k on it from a friend who's selling. I know he's looked after it and not had any major problems.
They are obviously a love 'em or hate 'em type of vehicle but can anyone give me some honest feedback on what they're like as a family motor for people who just like Landies?
Needless to say, it'll never be off the tarmac.
Thanks in advance!
Jock

You say Freelander 2, but a 56 plate V6 sounds like a FL1 V6 to me.
They are nice cars, I'd by another if the price was right. If it is a FL1 V6, be aware that they are truly shocking on fuel consumption, generally less than 20 Mpg. The cam belts (there are 3) are a ridiculously expensive job too, although not impossible to do DIY.

If it's a 56 plate FL2 I6, then it's a nicer (and completely differen) vehicle than the FL1, although just as bad on fuel and generally more expensive for everything.

Funnily enough he did say the gas mileage was shocking! He averages about 16mpg round town which is only a few more that a V8!
Thanks for the model info, but based on pictures pretty sure it's the 2nd version.
Thanks for the feedback!

Round town the MPG is shocking for the V6.

A 56 plate will more likely be a facelift FL1, and looks like this.

The FL2 is completely different vehicle, and looks like this.

Thanks Nodge defo the FL2. That was available in V6 petrol yeah? I'm getting quite taken with them. The HSE spec is good for that age of car.

The gaylander 2 is a good car the gaylander 1 int.the hse is a great spec, most of the toys you will want. The gaylander2 if it's a petrol it will be most likely an auto and quite rare.

Thanks Nodge defo the FL2.
Ok

No not a V6, it's a 3.2L straight 6, from Volvo. ;)

I'm getting quite taken with them.
The i6 FL2 is a nice vehicle, which I'd have myself, if funds allowed.

The HSE spec is good for that age of car
It's got pretty much everything a high spec modern car has, except things like HUD, lane departure warnings and radar CC.

If the boot door opens side ways it's a Freelander 1.

If the boot door opens upwards it's a Freelander 2.

I’ve owned 3 x Freelander 2’s and they were great, like proper scaled down Disco’s, with only the lack of low range and low slung fuel tank being minor issues. I’d happily have another.

As for size, it has a footprint no larger than a Focus!

The petrol version is very rare, so very few will have much experience of it.

Try to make sure that the engine is a straight 6 Volvo unit.

Have owned many different land rovers including 2 x Freelander 2's, nothing bad to say about them from me.
