air suspension

ok had two new air springs fitted but it still went down after a couple days but always came back when the engine was turned over, now due to unemployment it got left for a couple of weeks and the suspension bottomed out and the battery went flat, jump started the motor but still bottomed out, checked the fuses, pressed the off road button it pings and light flashes but nothing happens as far as the suspension concerned its dead. any suggestions ( I will not fit springs)

Get a jack under the back of ther car towbar and lift the car up. The air suspension won't kick in till it comes within its range. make sure doors are closed.

I have recharged battery, jacked up rear tow bar made sure doors are shut nothing happened. I have an icarsoft fault detector it shows no faults in the abs system.
it looks like I have to get underneath it and go through the system manually.

You should be looking in the EAS not abs ( not sure if that was a typo)

I've fixed a similar problem with mine in the past and have changed the pump, airbags and both sensors since I've had the Td5. Only thing I have changed my mind about is bags v springs .... I still have air bags but Springs would be less hassle in the long term.

I have never had a whiff of trouble since fitting coil springs. Air system made me OCD. I didn't go out in the car without checking both sides were level. Since fitting coils there has been nothing to worry about. OK it doesn't self level and you can't lift the car an extra 2 inches but I don't need these options.

Totally agree with the ocd thing, it would properly trigger mine, plus with my truck I have enough to worry about already!

Airsprings, yet more unnecessary carp. If they were so marvelous we would all be driving around on them. Even Citroen have stopped fitting their weird and wonderful system. If you want to vary the height of the rear of the car when towing, fit a Dixon-Bate. If you don't think the springs are stiff enough, fit heavy duty ones. All cheaper, less complicated and prone to trouble than airsprings I would never have bought my TD5 if it had airsprings.

Sorry but you springy guys just don’t understand/enjoy the luxury of the system.
And the other benefits it gives. Well maintained what’s the problem?

Please explain the benefits/luxury of the system. Also, the need to maintain yet another system which is connected to yet another computer would drive me MAD. Maintenance, with springs, "Are they still there and whole? Job done"

I have 'Air' and I don't notice any real 'luxury'. All I have noticed is when it fails it's a very bumpy ride home to get it fixed: sensors, fuse, airbags, pump, air lines, brass connector blocks. It's a bugger to tow when/if the damn thing fails.

So when you fit springs you will need dampeners(shocks never seen a conversion) no? Some wiring to stop the continuous bleeping?
We have never failed on leaky dampeners for years bonus.
We have towed heavy trailers and never worried about my lights blinding others, in fact I once took off a trailer and the back was way up high started her and she sorted out here life.
We can up the ground clearance when we come onto our drive without chipping away at the curb stones.
We have the choice to go a little lower/higher to make it a bit better for the given terrain.
There is even a “get out of jail free card” that will lift it even higher in given circumstances (never used or felt it so).

I am sure I have left loads of the luxuries out but the ride is just so much better

If the system is not kept up/understood then you have a lot of problems. Electronic side of the system has never had any replacement on ours, and I believe is rare.
If you buy the vehicle that way if you are the 1 actually converting

Oh and I do have a springy defender too so don’t say I don’t know both sides of the coin

If you have springs and like them fine, but I would never recommend a conversion over a fix

There is no real comparison there. My coil converted D2 handles better and rolls far less than my son's D90. I drove both air and coil spring D2s (a lot) when looking for mine and as long as the systems were in good nick and suitable for the vehicle weight (HD springs on an unladen D2 not a good match), I found the difference in road manners was marginal at best and happily chose one which happened to have a Terrafirma coil conversion.
That said, if you are towing, adding and removing heavy loads or P&P off roading, then I think the benefits of air springs are substantial as long as you accept the additional maintenance penalty.
The only real benefit of coils IMHO is the reduced risk of failure, and say what you like, but on a 15-20 year old vehicle those risks on a complex air suspension system are significant and are only getting worse. As I am prepping mine as an overland toy and a serious mechanical failure a long way from home could be catastrophic, I am very happy to trade the benefits of air for the reliability of springs.

The 'floating on air ride' is just a myth. They are springs and the shock absorbers smooth out the ride whether air springs or coils. After all its coils on the front anyway.
If you tow then they do level the rear end.
If you need an extra two inches then they do that.
I need neither of those tricks and can live without the complexity.

Isn't that what the height adjustable headlights are for? (On both my D1 and D2)
