Disco 2 Using a D2 as a daily driver

Long story short change of job means I am giving up my company car.

I have a D2 which is/was a toy, wondering if to use it for my commute into East London daily. Circa 30 mins driving and 30 mins crawling in traffic, 22 miles each way.

It’s a 157k 52 plate facelift TD5 auto on 245/75’s Kumho MT51’s with a snorkel, registered as an ES but appears to be an ES premium, has a tuning box on it, SLS and ACE. On the to do list is a leaking exhaust manifold, new injector seals and loom, very minor leak from around water pump and a small patch of welding. Other jobs are minor like a folding mirror repair and a door lock etc.

What ‘preventive maintenance’ should I look at if I’m driving it every day? Not sure if I’m in the minority using one as a toy only or if it’s a bit long in the tooth for using heavily like I will be crawling in traffic etc.

It’s either that or buy a car for work only, I do like the old girl though and driving it daily wouldn’t be a hardship.
 
I have driven my D2 to work for the last Year, over 25K ,as I have an 85 mile round trip plus other miles. It is now on 190K . But I do keep up with maintenance, just had to do the waterpump, and it has also had two hubs and a set of break pads.

But having said that, when it has a serious issue it wil be retired and put away in the shed and I will get a normal motor for the miles like a 5 year old Mondeo, as the fuel bill is a lot, of course having a heavy tight foot does not help.

If I was you , I would treat the water pump as a priority. But they are a PITA..LOL.

I’ve got a trip to Wales soon and I can’t fix it before that but as soon as I’m home it’s getting parked up until I get a weekend to do it. Have been reading the guides, looks like no fun at all!

I have a retired D1 to shift as it happens, the D2 is fairly new to me so hope she’s got some life in her yet!
 
Lez might be an issue with such an old car?

ULEZ will be an issue in October 2021 from memory, not an issue for now though. Also looking at PCP deals for a daily, there is something to be said for using what I already own though. I’d consider an upgrade to a D3/D4 but the tech scares me a bit!
 
I think a D2 automatic is a lovely car for crawling in traffic. My 2001 is my only car so is a daily driver (but as I'm retired I don't have to commute!) The only issue would be fuel consumption - clearly the Disco would be heavier than many others but I would suggest doing the sums. PCP would not be a cheap option!

As said the 2021 LEZ could be an issue if you cross the North Circular but you have a couple of years yet.

I think Ulez is central london whereas Lez covers a much larger area tbh I avoid london at all costs.

You are right to be afraid of the tech on modern cars and not just the landrovers, the thing is with the D3/4 like all older landroevrs theres a well known fix for all known issues.

The danger of a nice new pcp car used for commuting inside the m25 is the cost of getting all the dents out at the end of the term!

Lez is in central London, from Tower Bridge Road and Park Lane and isn’t applicable to cars or motor cycles. https://tfl.gov.uk/forms/16063.aspx
Ulez that’s now been introduced to cover a larger area of London.
The Ulez will be extended in 2021 to cover an even more greater area of London and also into the metropolitan/London borough side of Kent ( Orpington, Bromley etc) .

The above is of course is how I’ am now effected with my D1, now My disco isn’t allowed into Greenwich or over onto Blackheath. So it’s looks like it will get used even less now, fortunately I own two others cars that aren’t affected so can still visit my watering holes on Blackheath and Greenwich plus the others that will be in 2021 Ulez zone. :)

I don't think that map's right by the way - the 2021 ULEZ is the area inside the North & South Circulars. Quite good for us as we quite often use Crystal Palace Caravan Club site which involves towing the caravan round the South Circular. An entertaining experience.....

I haven’t taken that much notice as It doesn’t affect me that much, and have been near the Ulez zone yet in a car.
I believe that in 2021 the zone will be the one bordering the M25 and east of London as the Dartford Thames crossing, the recent zone is east as far as the Blackwall Tunnel Thames crossing.
 
I know at work we have a large (100plus) selection of trucks Euro5 and Euro6 and for the last few weeks theres chaos in the offices trying to work out what truck can do what jobs, watch the prics of your food go up!
 
ULEZ for passenger cars as I understand it is currently the congestion charge zone, in 2021 it becomes everything inside the north and south circular so I would fall foul of it by then. If I were to fall foul of that I’d simply be pleased the old girl made it that far though to be fair if looked after I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t
