Hi all,

I was wondering whether you may be able to help/advise me on an issue with my car. I’ve owned a Freelander TD4 for around a year now. Up until very recently it’s been a great car. As my first Land Rover I’ve been impressed.

A few weeks ago, whilst driving the car. The engine light came on and the car went in to limp mode. I took the car straight to a local garage, who read the fault as ‘boost pressure’. When returning from the garage there was a quiet ‘pop’ sound from the engine bay, after which the engine light went off, and the car began to plume thick black smoke from the exhaust.

I’ve since driven the car home and parked it on my drive. Whenever I start the car, it drives slowly with black smoke coming from the exhaust on revs over 2.5k but the engine light remains off. I’ve done a bit of digging and the most common cause of this fault appears to be with the engine hoses around the intake and intercooler. I’ve found a uprated replacement set consisting of the air intake hose, 3x intercooler hoses and turbo intercooler hose for around the £150 mark, but I’m a bit reluctant to buy them if the issue could be something else. My current plan is to remove the existing hoses and inspect them for any obvious issues/failures before purchasing the new set.

To be honest I bought the car as a run around. I could just cut my losses and sell the car as spares or repair, but the tightwad inside me wants to at least attempt a repair, especially given it’s so simple, before I sell up.

So I was just wondering whether anyone else has experienced a similar problem, or has any idea as to whether the issue could be related to something else? The symptoms appear to be similar to those I’ve read where the hoses were split and no longer holding pressure under boost. However the way in which I got to those symptoms (i.e. the initial limp mode and engine light, followed by a pop sound and the engine light disappearing) don’t seem to be consistent with anything else I’ve read. Most people just get the limp mode and black smoke. Could the issue just be the breakdown of the hoses? Or could it be an fault with the turbo or another major component?

As I say, I’ve done some reading / searching, but I couldn’t find anything which is similar to the conditions I experienced prior the failure. So I have started a new thread.

One other thing worth mentioning, is that the front of the engine bay, around the fan and radiator area, is completely covered in what looks like thick, black oil. I have no idea whether this is recent and caused by the issue, or whether it has always been there and I’ve only just noticed it because I’ve been looking. I don’t know whether this is important, I’m just trying to provide as much information as possible to help resolve the issue. The rest of the car seems to be fine.

Thanks in advance for any advice given!

Sounds like a boost pipe to me. Check the short elbow pipe, on the right front of the engine. This is the normal one to go, especially if the inlet tract is full of goop from the EGR system.

You can buy a full set of silicon hoses for the TD4, off EBay for about £50. ;)

Thanks for the reply. I’m going to remove the pipes tonight so I’ll check the short elbow on the right hand side. It has been changed before, as they’re all bright blue. But all four hoses have been crudely cut and forced in to position. Which leads me to think it could be the hoses causing the fault. Another thing I noticed, the plastic inlet / rocker cover is missing the bottom right retaining screw (when looking at the engine from the front of the car), allowing the plastic inlet / rocker cover to move upwards and downwards when the engine revs, which is pulling that same right hand hose with it. The bottom part remains attached so the hose is being stretched and compressed with the plastic inlet / rocker cover movement.

I’ll have a look at the inlet tract too and clean it out if necessary. My only other concern is that pop sound. I’m worried that there’s been some further damage as a result of the boost pressure failure. But that is tomorrows problem.

Ok. So they're now silicone.

That doesn't sound good. Make sure they're fitted correctly, and the clips are tight.

Possibly the clips are loose, as silicone hoses are generally pretty durable.

Have you got any pictures to host here, or video to host on YouTube?

Yep. DPH - which seems to be a local Derby brand.

I've removed and tightened the large front right hand hose. It's now seated fully home and the clips fastened tight. I noticed that there's a crack on the plastic cover, right over the manifold, which looks to be leaking. Also, the plastic connection at the very top right side is loose (opposite the oil filler cap). It just pulls right out. Should there be something more here?

Have you got any pictures to host here, or video to host on YouTube?

I took a video too, I'll get that uploaded.
