Sorry for yet another td5 starting issue thread. I’ve searched and searched, but just found a load of variables and different issues, so I’m still non the wiser? I need to ask some questions to, hopefully, point me in the right direction.

I started getting an intermittent starting problem, where the engine would spin over fine, but not fire straight away. Eventually it would gradually burst into life after a lot of cranking and run perfectly. The problem would disappear for a few days, then return. There’s no pattern as to whether it’s cold or warm start.

I noticed a bit of weeping around the filter housing and replaced it with a new one, complete with new non return valve, etc. The problem disappeared, so I thought I’d cured it. But it started to re occur after a while, so I then replaced the fuel pum with a new one. Again, the problem disappeared for a few days, then returned.

I have nanocom, but there are no faults recorded and everything looks normal. Even the injector tests are showing ok. There is no diesel leaking from the fuel pressure regulator and no diesel in the oil, so I’m assuming that injector seals and fpr are ok? The rev counter moves while cranking, not a lot, but definitely moves, so I’m assuming the crank position sensor is ok, too?

I’ve just ordered OEM injector washers and seals, but I don’t want to just throw parts at it in the hope that, eventually, I’ll nail the problem.

So here’s what I’d like to know. Will there always be diesel in the oil if the washers and seals fail? Does a faulty fuel pressure regulator always leak?

Once started, the car idles and runs perfectly and has never cut out. Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks
Steve

Replace the washers(and o-rings), the washers can give such starting symptoms and there are no other signs to rule them out

Ok, will do. That isn’t next move. I just wondered whether there will always be diesel in the oil when they fail. Thanks for the reply.

Diesel in oil is due to the o-rings but those dont give other symptoms, the copper washers are letting combustion gas into the fuel rail which creates backpressure they have no contact with oil

Sounds the same as an issue I had. Injector washers sorted it and the job wasn't that tricky. Might be worth checking for oil in the injector loom and changing that at the same time if needed?

Thanks, fingers crossed it’ll sort my problem, too.
I’ve already checked for oil in the loom and it’s all clean.

Ok, the saga continues.
In true Land Rover fashion, it appeared to have fixed itself after I drove it like a maniac for a mile. It went like **** off a shiny shovel and pulled like a train. Since then, it has started with a flick of the key every time......until today. Started perfectly this morning, drove 10 miles, turned it off outside a shop for about 5 minutes, then it just point blank refused to start. It was spinning over like a good ‘un but wasn’t even trying to fire up. I purged the system and still no better.
Then, as a last ditch and desperate effort, I tried something which had worked for someone else when I was doing my searches. Locked the car from the inside, then unlocked it. The bloody thing started immediately with no struggle and it’s been perfect since, for now. So now I’m wondering if it’s an immobiliser problem?

Ok, I replaced the injector washers and I rings today. It’s all up and running, but will have to wait and see how it starts over the next few days.
The washers I took out didn’t look too bad, to be honest.

I found the perfect tool for removing the injectors. Just too one arm off my biggest bearing puller and used that to lever them up.

IMO they dont look well at all as long as you see those black residues on them cos there was the combustion gas leak into the fuel rail

Oh right. The other three were worse! Lol
Well fingers crossed it’s sorted now. Will report back. Thanks for your help.
