When my logbook arrived recently I note it is already registered as a ‘Historic Vehicle’. But when i check its tax and MOT status online it says ‘This vehicles MOT HAS EXPIRED...it is an offence blah blah’
Also the same for the tax?

As it is exempt from BOTH as the previous owner explained what do I have to ‘do’ now regards getting it road legal? As i cannot technically apply for tax (as it is not required) how do i get the notification changed online to something like ‘vehicle exempt’ ? The previous owner wisely took it in for an MOT simply to find out what needed doing for the new owner, as a courtesy.

I will be stripping the body off and either fitting a galv or welding the chassis and getting it like new. So i will have it tested to check the brakes on the rolling road. Next year it will still be in perfect nick as I dont intend driving mega miles in it. But my question is if its MOT exempt do I need to do anything every year to keep it legal?

Thanks

The historic vehicle status is in the DVLA system, when you tax the vehicle online it will show the costs as nil rated.
The MOT system will show this message:

Note the MOT exempt message there is a link to a form you can complete if you tax at a post office:
https://assets.publishing.service.g...-declaration-of-exemption-from-mot.pdf#page=2

If you tax online there is a 'tick box' declaration

If your tax online is not showing nil rate it might be worth giving DVLA a ring as it should do if vehicle is classed as historic status.

I think you meant TAX it when you buy it?
Both.

The vehicle must retain it's identity and cannot be radically altered without voiding the HV exemption, the only way for it to be verified is through an MOT and the only time you could get away with enforcement is at time of sale and upon the new keepers application for a free road fund licence.

At least that is how i read it.

I take it you don’t own an Historic Vehicle then :)
If the vehicle is classified as Historic Vehicle that is it. Then it’s exempt from road tax and an MOT and will remain so even if the vehicle has a new owner.

Where u got the MOT verification idea I don’t know. :(

“As i cannot technically apply for tax (as it is not required)” tax is required but it’s exempt from payment. Just apply for the tax every year as normally, your application will be accepted and you won’t have to pay so £250 saved. Great isn’t it,

Yes DEFINITELY on the log book HISTORIC VEHICLE but today I got a demand to SORN IT??? EH??
if its tax and MOT free it is insured so WHY sorn it?

That just means the tax is expired - even though you don’t have to pay, you still have to have a tax disc (nowadays online but used to be a physical paper disc).

I had a tax and test exempt beetle, I still had to go to the post office every year with my form - I paid nothing - and was given a tax disc that said ‘rate NIL’ and class ‘historic’

Same thing with the online system, you still have to ‘tax’ it by selecting a box but you don’t have to pay.

Yes thank you, I have just taxed and MOT'd her LOL!! BUT PLEASE NOTE this vehicle will not leave my yard until she is roadworthy! I think she may fall in half :)

Yeah I used to put my mot exempt beetle through an actual mot more to reassure me I was maintaining it right and that it was actually safe lol
