Hi to all,
Im hoping for some clarification for people in the know regards proposed garage works to my defender. Hope to get some advice please...…...Ive a 1996 300tdi Defender (290k miles). It had a RC chassis put on a few years ago so its all good in that regards. However, the engine now needs looking at - Ive been told its got a crack in the Cylinder Head. The plan was to put a Turner Engine in which I cant afford at the moment so Ive been told to just pressure test and/or replace the cylinder head (£1k-£1.5k). Ive also been told not to do this as the new pressures will brake the rest of the engine. Im not a mechanic and Im asking for advice from people in the know of what they suggest to do. Many thanks

new pressure etc is rubbish ,just get a another head, its a simple job on a 300

I don't - that's what I've been told by 4-5 mechanics who have looked at the car (literally) and been told of the symptoms. I was told yesterday that it could still be a head gasket failure and not assume the head even if the oil is not mixing with the coolant. This is the garage that wants to pressure test the head. Thanks.
 
head gasket passing gases is the most common fault they only last a certain time even with a good cooling system, usual symptom of a failing gasket is pressurisation of cooling system not oil/water mixing

What would you guys do - get a secondhand engine from ebay or even SORN until I can afford a Turner replacement ?

what symptoms have you got
 
Loses about 1/4 litre of coolant daily. Smokes like a beast sometimes. Doesn't lose oil - all ok in colour. Seems low on power, but that just might be me. Hope this helps

How are you getting on?
Sounds like the head gasket has broken down. This does not necessarily mean the head has a crack in it. A visual check can often detect a crack, but a pressure test takes out the human element.
It's reasonably straightforward to change the head gasket on a 300Tdi. You could change it and see how you get on. If the symptoms return, then you may have a crack in the head. Or, if you can spend a bit more money, you could have the head tested before you replaced the gasket.
 
Going in next week. Hopefully just a gasket but they want to send the head away for testing. Thanks again to all

They would then have to do the job again, including the pressure test, at their expense. I'd bet the news says there was a problem with the head, cos that would justify the extra expense. If they say the head was fine after the test, then it's a garage worth sticking with. :cool::)

thats the thinking ,but from personal experience in testing heads etc it doesnt show any more than you can see and there is no test to show if head has been heated to the point it will move again
