Freelander 1 Steering geometry

Having changed lower ball joints in front suspension I took car, 2002 td4, for a tracking check. My manual says 2.36mm toe out although shows a positive value. I always thought toe in was positive. Tyre centre set it up to toe in as per their book. Similar figure 2.28mm. Now I am confused. Should landy be toe out or toe in at the front?? I did have some feathering on inner edges of tyres so that would suggest too much toe out so maybe tyre centre is right ?

Any toe out would make it inherently unstable front or back. Ideal is tiny amount of toe in.

The Freelander needs a couple of mm toe out so the tyre place is correct.

Thanks. What a complex and misunderstood subject this is! Never had tyre edge wear on a Freelander before so never really thought about it except getting it checked at new tyre time.

Haynes quotes 2.36mm toe out on the front for my wheel size as does the above attachment. Unless I am reading it wrong

I went through this recently - spec is actually a bit of toe out (wheels pointing away from the straight ahead position) but this had given me some edge wear on the tyres.

When i had it reset after fitting new rear tyres and switching rears to front i had the wheels set in the straight ahead position which i believe is the minimum end of the LR spec

too soon to detect any strange wear yet

usually front wheel drive have toe out as the torque on the wheels as they are driven pulls the wheels in , equal 4x4 wheels set straight and rear wheel cars have toe in as the front wheels are pushed out so with toe in during driving the wheels run straight

That's correct. There are a couple of tow out measurements for the FL1. There's the standard toe out and an optimised toe out where driver's complain about tram-lining.

So couple of mm toe in is best from experience then??

Think you misread my earlier message. Then I read yours saying tyre centre was right!! Tyre centre set up to 2mm toe in. Wrong then??

I probably did, then promptly added to the confusion by saying toe in instead of toe out.

The wheels definitely toe out by just over 2mm IIRC

Degrees minutes - 0 10’
Decimal degrees - 0.167
Millimeters:
15 inch wheel - 1.20mm
16 inch wheel - 1.30mm
17 inch wheel - 1.35mm
