Me too. I think I told the story on here.

I'd never use the single hook type again, and rather than buy a different set would nip to a local garage and do it in their far safer contained device.

undo wheel nuts ! jack under axle ! get wheel off ! axle stand under chassis (wheels wood owt to hold motor up in air SAFE !) undo bottom shock nut ! undo top nut if your changing shocks ! jack between axle & bump stop if its still there & jack away job done !!
the trouble with spring comp's is you more than likely get the in the WRONG place OR nacker the threads up on them ! or when taking them off have a NEAR miss with your HEAD !:mad::mad::mad::rolleyes:

this reminds me of my dad, he’s nearly 90 and worked in mechanics all his life and told me how he changed coils, two people and some angle iron , he did say there were many times when it got abit lively trying to change them, was a case of having to then , lol

personally always used spring compressors myself as i fancied keeping my head,

That's OK, maybe that'll give you a hand to sort. My ex mother in law used to ring the ambulance and when they came out she'd try to get them to take her to the shops for booze and cigarettes :mad:
 
The issue for me is a spring compressor is tightening a coiled spring, a feckin powerful spring ... and I've seen them go.

Jacking the axle apart means the spring just drops out ... There's nothing properly under tension that has a chance to 'explode' out, the axle is but to nowhere near the extent of a coil spring. And he'll still have to undo the shock, and maybe remove the wheel etc .. unless he also removes it from the top with the turret etc etc ..
 
I've got cheap coil spring compressors and they're absolutely fine. They've got double claws and were about £15 I think. The reason I don't like forcing the axle down is the distortion it puts on the bushes.

You wuss :p :D - I reckon it's easier to let the axle drop having undone the shockers, and probably safer too - exactly as Paul D says:-

From what he has said, the shocks are undone - and the reason for the job...maybe

I tried that method on my sons polo as I couldn't find my compressors and the bloody things just kept slipping down the springs, I only managed it after I borrowed the compressors back of my brother:rolleyes: no wonder I couldn't find umm.
 
I used the jack to do this today, spring compressors stayed in their box.
