Can anyone give me pointers on how to (safely) remove the rear window on my MK1 I've had the door card off and the cables have snapped. I've bought a repair kit am struggling to remove the upright rails. Haynes doesn't seem to be much use.
Regards
Paul

No need to remove glass. Window is held to mechanism by 2 clamps. Find these and loosen bolts, put piece of card over top of glass and force it into top rubber to hold out of the way. Fix with a bit of tape for safety. Then the mechanism is bolted to door (behind door panel). Loosen/remove these bolts and remove power plug from motor. The motor and mech can then be juggled out through a hole in the door. Need to remove plastic sheet to suit. Fit cables as old ones and refit. I know it sounds simple, but not too bad, just be prepared to lose an odd knuckle! Good luck.

If you can't see the clamps because the window is stuck in the wrong position, you will need to cut the cables inside the door. (I used a Dremel and safety glasses as the cable can exposed inside the door when cut) Either have somebody hold the glass or prop it up with a block of wood or something.

Even with the tailgate glass fully up you can get a 10mm spanner on the “clamp” bolts that hold the glass in the holders, you won’t be able to see them but will feel the spanner locate onto the bolt head

It is fully up and I could feel the nut but it looks like the clamp is made of ally and there's quite a lot of oxidisation built up.

Yes loads of corrosion usually, I’ve not had any bolts sheer off yet, probably due to steel bolts in monkey metal aluminium, you only need a few turns of the bolt before the window will pull out of the clamps

This bloomin door will be the death of me, the 10mm clamp nut won't budge any suggestions?
