I have read a lot off threads about installing a aftermarket radio, how to deal with the amplifier and get the steering wheel controls working. This is just to show that it is not that hard to get everything working in a easy way..
I have a Freelander 1 td4 HSE Gant edition with the original Harman Kardon set. 3 speakers broken, and pioneer radio wrongly installed. So no working system :(
I bought a Joying double din unit. That is easy to install into the car and fits perfect. I also removed the original Harman Kardon amplifier, replaced it with a JVC mono amplifier (70 watts) just for the sub. To get everything working as it should you have to connect each speaker cable underneath the seat so you get one line from radio to the speaker. (no amplifier for the door speakers.) The Sub is double coiled. to fix this, connect it in serial. from the amplifier the + goes to + on sub, the - Goes to second + on the sub, and the second - goes back to the - on the amplifier. From the radio to the sub it is a tulip connection .Steering control is easy (when you know it) there are 2 cables coming from the control unit. black white and Black green. Black white you connect to ground. Black green to "key one" cable on joying unit. (To find the correct ones, open up the steering wheel collum. you see a connector with six cables. in my car all the cables where cut away by the previous owner) Program the keys on the joying unit and it works :) No extra control units or else needed..
I replaced the broken speakers with Phoenix Gold Flat cone 16,5CM.
After a good day off work: Double Din android system, with Navi, dashcam, Phone connection for cals and music. and steering wheel control.

Not this type.. because off the side controls on the screen. But i know that there is an upgrade available. You just have to find out what the max size is. And then google it

Excellent work. I've been wanting to fit a double din unit to my HSE for a while now but have struggled to find a supplier that does a patch lead for the Becker equipped HSE models like ours. Do you have a link for the HU you fitted? It would also be interesting to hear your thoughts after using it for a couple of weeks given the variable nature of these types of units.

As nodge says, nice climate unit.

Sorry for my late reaction.. had to work a lot :)
Original mine was with a becker unit. I also have a HSE Gant hot climate edition. The previous owner removed it and tried to patch thru all the wiring from a pioneer radio directly to the speakers.
When i bought the car only 1 speaker was functional, so i just remover everything and started by just testing cable by cable. made all connections correct en placed just one amp for the sub.
The original amp from harman kardon has internal switches inside which communicate with the becker unit. every other unit like mine now, wont be able to do that. So the best thing is to remove it and deside what you want, every speaker behind an amplifier or only the sub.

mine comes from joyingauto.eu and i am very pleased with it (using it now for 12 months) sound is realy great and options on de module are fantastic. It plays all formats of audio, mp4 ect.
because i use navigation for actual traffic problems i have tomtom and works perfect. also OBD2 in combination with torque so i can see in real time all sensors in the car,
A dashcam is also fitted (i live in the worst traffic part of the netherlands and this is a must have :) ) and of course phone connectivity.
To make sure traffic support as al the apps are up tot date the unit connects automaticly to my phone (hotspot) for the needed data
Maybe in time i will upgrade mine to the new 4gig octacore version. this because that unit has built in DSP (digital sound processor) and that is for even better sound the next step.
