Central Locking Woes

Hi all

I have a 2013 Freelander 2.

Hopefully I can explain this properly. I have searched for answers before posting so don’t think it has been spoken about.

When I unlock the car with the fob it won’t always unlock. It tries, things click and motors whir, wing mirrors open, etc. But the drivers or any other doors don’t unlock. I can unlock the boot with the fib independently though and I can long press to open the windows, which is how I get in most of the time. When I reach in, sometimes the central console can unlock it, sometimes it can’t. To add, this is more so after the car has been off for about 20 mins or more and on the odd time the drives door unlocks to the catch, so partially opens but not enough to get the door fully open (imagine a cracked window on the latch at home).

The door handle on the inside after a window openning always works.

Have you checked the battery connection are all nice and tight, sounds like a bad earth somewhere?

Thanks. I did have a look. I’ve gone around all the doors and they all also seem ok. The latch is firm in place. What I am finding is that if I shut the drivers door, the car will always happily appear to lock but then I get the double bleep and i check all the doors. The drivers door is unlocked. When I open it the alarm goes off. I have to shut it a few times and eventually it closes down properly.

First step is to get fault codes read for the locking system and then a diagnostic check of wiring and inputs/outputs

Sounds as if latch is faulty but depends on outcome of above

Will do. Thanks for the advice. Is it something I can do myself? Is there a recommended machine for reading the codes?

There are far more expensive ones on the market and you can get the torque -pro cheaper , there are apps on the android web site you can download to use it . I can not grantee it will read the codes you need but it does work for me (I have a 2006 td4 ) wares my son has a 2005 1.8 and can not get it to work for him . You might be better off finding a friendly garage that has a fault code reader

Don't those ELM devices just talk to the engine ECU?

Don't think so mate mine gives me the option to read and clear error codes amongst other things

An OBD reader will only talk to engine management ECU - you need a “proper” diagnostic tool such as IID to talk to the rest of the systems on the car

Sounds to me like a faulty actuator. When one fails (or the plug is not fitted fully) the whole system goes into a safe mode. It allows you to lock doors manually and then lock the drivers door with the key. Using the centre console switch should work after the key is placed in the ignition. You should be able to lock all other doors from the centre switch. It is one of the safety features....... The apparent randomness in the action is because of the pro logic sequence (probably not called that by LR) that hasn't been followed. I mean;- B must happen before C unless D has happened, in which case E will happen etc etc. Check all fuses and relays first, then the plugs in the door latches. Then splash out on getting the fault codes read if you can find a member close by with a Hawkeye, or take to the main dealer JUST to read the codes! Good luck.
