Series 3 starter motor problem

I have a 1972 Series 3 2.25 petrol. All has beem ok for the couple of months I've owned it but last week I got the dreaded click sound on turning the key.
I've cleaned up the earth connections etc to rule out a bad connection. I did manage to get it going but it has reverted to the click sound. For the past few weeks the starter has shown signs of the battery being low but the battery is fairly new and fine. I believe the starter may be knackered? My question is is it worth getting a reconditioned one rather than a Chinese pattern part. And if so where is best in the east London area to source one.
In the meantime I've ordered a crank handle to get the thing going with that.

86 quid...not bad with a 3 year warranty...I got one from them some years ago for a petrol I had, was fine

When I bought my series about 4 years ago the seller told me he had fitted a recon starter but it turned out to be a scrapyard one which was sluggish when the engine was cold. I've since bought one from Bearmach ( I think ) and so far it's been fine but it's only been on for about a year. I don't know what it is about series starter motors but they don't last long.

Buy one from Bearmach then take your one an have a go at reconditioning it yourself. I would have thought all the parts are still available and a good clean would do it wonders

It might look easy but getting them screws out is a b'stard.

Hi, this may be pointless and that you've probably checked but i was having the same problems a little while back, after all earths were cleaned etc and the battery posts was cleaned with sand paper, it turned out that the actual connectors on the battery that the main cables are fitted was causing the problem, i purchased some new ones from halfords and all was good, just thought it might help. Cheers

I had same prolem, it was the leads inside the battery connectors, cleaned and soldered and now it spins much faster.

just about to renew my leads, bought some heavy duty truck ones off ebay rated at 415 amps, hope that is enough
