I ripped out the plastic roof vent prior to painting the roof (they were really brittle and broken) thinking i'd just get new ones.

But that doesn't seem possible as I cant find any....and certainly none at a decent price! Part 19 BTW!

Next option is to cut and rivet on checker plate. But does anybody have any better ideas?

Yes do exactly the same but don't use chequer plate!
If you riveted on some smooth ali plate to the inside (rivet head outside) you could then fill, smooth, and paint it. this would give a result which, other than a line of rivets, would not be noticeable as a hole missing something or a patch. If you can find some suitable adhesive you could do the same thing without the rivets and then you could not tell at all.

I have just re-sprayed all the roof. I should have thought about playing it over at the time! I like the LED work light option though!
