crank sensor or fuel pump

i spoke to the guy in L/R today and told him my problem,he said the cam sensor wouldn't make it cut out, more likely to be fuel problem but he wouldn't commit himself without putting on the computer, also said its unlikely to be crank sensor, in the past 3 years he's only changed 1 crank sensor on td4. anyway having a diagnostic test done tomorrow £99 +vat. cheers

Paddychip, you never mentioned that it cut out. All you have said is that you ahve trouble starting it. If it is the cam sensor which I have said then the chances are it wont show up on that diagnostic. Read my previous threads, Ming told me that the fault would not show up as it is an intermitent fault. Sounds to me like LR are going to pull your teeth out for fuel pumps etc...

Having my teeth extracted now! Parked it, came back, turned over and no fire up. It was running well before so no prewarning. In to service and fuel pump in tank has packed up. Been told that they can have intermittent bad starting before total failure but generally they go without much warning! Last fault was starter motor just clicking when turning key - loose connection? No **** chance! Known Fault with BMW starter motor solenoids!!! ****** BMW as well!

evening all, i came out of tescos on xmas eve and my td4 wouldn't start.got a few mates to push and off it went.no trouble since , until last friday,i parked in a multi storey, refused again. called the aa, first one arrived in a high top van and couldn't drive into carpark. he gave it a few turns and informed me my pump was dead,he called for a smaller van to tow me out.the second one arrived and said it wasn't the pump but 99% sure it was crank sensor. he gave me a tow and off it went. i ordered a crank sensor from L/R which i collected today.the wife took it out this morning and it cut out while she was driving, i towed it for 2 miles but it won't start.does anyone know if starter motor have to be removed to fit sensor, and does anyone think the first aa man was right and my fuel pump is gone.52 reg with 40,000 miles, i'd be greatful for any suggestions, thanks
Cut out while driving - hmm, dunt sound like a cam sensor to me,where is my white stick - can anyone hear WHAT I SAID ?

yeah, i said it cut out while the wife was driving it last friday-- see my first posting. p.

The way the garage explained it to me was that the cam sensor and crank sensor talk to each other. The cam sensor is used when starting (and thats all) and the crank sensor for something else. Apparently the likelyhood of the crank sensor going is very slim.

Like I said the cam sensor is a common fault, just do a search on here for poor starting or intermitent starting and the posts will come back with cam sensor.

It may be worth trying the crank sensor but I do believe it is a pain in the arse of a job to do.

Let me know what happens either way!

crank shaft sensor its easy one 8mm bolt and elec conector 5 min job
