Fuel pump issues Series 3

Ok after getting the Series 3 2.25 petrol ready for the road I’ve been having problems getting it to run properly. I didn’t seem to be getting fuel up to the carb so fitted a new fuel pump which packed in almost straight away. Britpart. That was replaced with another Britpart one and all seemed to be well but after test driving the car today it cut out and again seems to be struggling to get fuel up to the carb. I’ve got an in line filter just before the carb and there is barely any fuel in it. So I am thinking about fitting an electric fuel pump. Is this a good idea or should I just buy a better make fuel pump? Either that or rebuild the original one?

I have one of those inline filters and it never fills.You could try disconnecting the pipe to the carb and seeing if there is a good flow into a container whilst engine is turned over. Are you sure it's fuel that is the problem?

Good tip as above, You could look at the pick up pipe in the tank likely the same as my diesel where it has a fine mesh gauze on the bottom in tank which can collect crud, mines not petrol but could it be floats/ jets in carb , you could also gravity feed a pipe into carb as a test

I th8nk it's fuel related. It's a new tank and new carb. I did have an issue with water in the fuel. Not sure how it got there but removed the tank and cleaned it out. Had the fuel pick up pipe out along with the fuel line and blew it out with an airline.

Electric pumps and a few feet of fuel pipe isn't too expensive, you could rig one up as a temporary measure to see if it resolves the problem. If it does, make it more permanent. Be careful though, some pumps are too powerful for the carb float valve and may cause leaks.

A low pressure facet pump will do. These are also interrupter pumps so run until a pressure is built up then stop. Then ticks the pump as the fuel is used. Facet also have a gauze pre filter on the input

Three pumps in three years persuaded me to go electric. I have a Defender TDi in mine but I think the pumps are the same. One of the pumps suffered a broken alloy casting around the operating lever, another one just simply gave up pumping, didnt notice until I changed the filter and just couldnt get the thing primed and bled and the last one, a distress Britpart purchase, appeared to pump OK but starting was poor.

I replaced with a Facet Posi Flo with a small pre filter and built in none return valve. Very happy with the results and if it ever fails its easy to replace and similar pumps are widely available.

I bought a cheap replacement fuel pump, can't complain about the price, under £20 inc postage and it works fine, but...the alloy casting is very thin, its done a year but I can't see it lasting 20 or 30 like the AC one. Bought an overhaul kit for the AC but that cost £25 so I think its a case of you get what you pay for.

I bought an aftermarket one (bearmach I think but definitely not BP), seems to work ok but drops the fuel if parked up for any time. Any ideas?

The valves are leaking, if they are tight it holds the vacuum.
